hektorsmonster / Hecktor == You Decide [56k beware]

About 5months ago I bought a RotaryWarehouse Stage 4 engine from hektorsmonster, along with Wolf v4 EMS & GReddy Turbo kit.
The seller had a few guys vouching for him so he seemed legit.

his thread here: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=627015

I did not touch the engine for about 4 months due to work travel.
anyhow.. I'm going to let the photos speak. I installed the engine in the car, sprayed some 2cycle into the housings to prelube before starting (with the map provided on the EMS that came with the package deal)... the car wouldn't start.

Michael & NYT were kind enough to help with a new map.. the car fired up. I was having trouble with the idle, motor shook horribly rough. Did a compression test and found the rear rotor dead as a fucking doornail.

after opening the engine this morning, here is what I found (keep in mind i have not had more than 30min / 1hr of run time on the engine).

as you can clearly see in the photos.. the port work its terrible (its way too far into the oil control area, etc). Notice the blue coloration / heat marks on the e-shaft (lack of oil). Not one piece of this engine is usable. not the irons, housings, shaft, etc. Stage4 engine my ass!

This is what I bought for $6k... I got owned hard.

primary goes way deep into oil control ring territory

secondary is just awful. catching the side seals.

closing lip on the exhaust port doesnt look too hot

It looks like they gave a grinder to a 12 year old and told him to go at it.

Textbook example of everything you can possibly do wrong while building an engine.

I've never seen broken oil rings before...

Whoever built this motor should at least pay for the cost of a new engine for hwnd.

to add to the thread.. i did not find the missing corner seal or missing side seal from the rotor. because the turbo isn't trashed, i dont believe the parts were even there to start with (the sides of the exhaust turbine look good - no metal passed there)

rotaryinspired 10-07-07 04:20 PM

Wow. That is terrible. Sorry to hear about it.

RX7 RAGE 10-07-07 05:30 PM

looks fucken horrible

hwnd 10-07-07 07:10 PM

I've msg'ed hektorsmonster today - giving him a chance to explain his side.. being that i tried to contact him over the DOA WolfEMS, i doubt i'll get a response.

Rx-7Doctor 10-07-07 07:55 PM

He has not been active in over a month on the forum. When exactly did you take possesion of this engine?

hwnd 10-07-07 08:14 PM

roughly April. I'm not trying to claim any money,etc... just wanted to point out what i paid for & what i received.

the engine sat on a pallet just as he shipped it to me for 4 months +/-. I should have, could have... but didn't do anything about verifying the engine.

if i would have found a bad turbo on top of this all, i think the matter would be completely different as in he knew it was blown/tossed a seal etc. turbos rear turbine *looks* okay surely a corner seal didn't go through it (no damage to the turbo). however, he promised that the cmpression was good in both rotors (as pointed out in his FS thread).. The port job, careless tuning, hard driving is what i'm blaming for the cause of the damage (95% on the shit port job).

Tomorrow I'll have photos showing just how bad the port job is by letting everyone see just how much the seals hang over the edge of the port job.

again, my eye sight is 20/20 looking back.. but w/e can i do now? just show people :).

GoodfellaFD3S 10-07-07 08:45 PM

WOW. I've NEVER seen damage that bad, and that portwork looks horrible........

MaczPayne 10-08-07 01:08 AM

Wow. That motor is scrap.

hwnd 10-08-07 04:37 PM

yeah its bad; i have no idea if the rotarywarehouse guy(s) are even forum member(s). i've tried calling their old number (Mazda Recycling), it was explained to me that RW has been out if commission for a while.. gee, i wonder why? :)

ursmokd 10-08-07 04:52 PM

wow that sucks. sorry to hear. you should hire a ninja ;)
hope you get it all worked out mang.

I was just talking to Jason (hwnd) on the phone and told him about a port job that I found on a core motor once. Words don't do it justice, so I thought I would post a few pictures to convey the incompetence. I don't know who or what shop did this but it cost a poor guy on eBay $3,000 to learn something the hard way. It was completely seized due to bad assembly, to boot. I bought the core from him with zero miles on it for $57 plus shipping but very little was re-usable.

Just FYI.

MaczPayne 10-09-07 05:01 PM

OMG Blake!!!!

I can't believe how horrible that port job is!

rotarycrazy 10-09-07 05:56 PM

people like him should be hung by the balls.

hwnd 10-09-07 07:04 PM

Wow! never knew helen keller was into rotary :)

-=Lil Red=- 10-18-07 06:47 AM

all in good fun i suppose ;]

We've always been told not to operate any sort of equipment under the influence.
What is that crap in the coolant passages, grease?

Sprockett 10-26-07 01:09 PM

I think that's just the crap that accumulates if you don't do a coolant flush. I thought there was a thread in here a few weeks ago with a guy that didn't flush his coolant, which led to blocked passages and a blown motor. He showed pics that looked a little like that

Slammedblk7 10-26-07 05:34 PM

Damn that guy should be condemned.

1. Possibly the worst porting ever.
2. Sloppiest hand ever, dremel flew off the port.
3. Lowest engine prep work I've seen.(dirty ass engine parts)
4. Used a dead ass rotor for rebuild
5. Appears to be used apex seals

Thats just what I see first hand.

I've never ever seen the oil control rings take that type of damage.

I've seen some whoppers in my day. I think this tops it.

This is straight C&P from the rotary warehouse site.

"During Scotts 11 years at CPE, he has built thousands of rebuilt rotary engines."

"As a machinist Scotts Porting & Polishing skills are top notch. He ports all motors by hand using templates he designed for maximum flow. He has also designed tools to Pressure Test the housings. "

hwnd 11-02-07 11:44 PM

my ports look nothing like that.

As for the coolant buildup. This is how I received it, there is no telling how long the engine sat before I received it.

I've not heard from the seller or `rotary warehouse`... I didn't (honestly) expect to.
