here goes

the car had an engine fire and was sold to a body shop. The body shop used parts from it to repair a customers car. I then bought what was left...I was contacted by Jon who wanted the tranny and pedals to convert his car to manual. We made a deal that i would let him take anything needed to convert his car to manual in exchange, he would store the car at his shop for me.. about a month passed and i went by the shop and Jon and my car was GONE!!! the phone numbers that i have never get answered and no return calls... i have been looking for him since... any help you can provide would be great

no, no title:(

How about a bill of sale, anything from the body shop showing that you paid them for the car?

dreed7235 01-20-10 03:50 PM

Hopefully lesson learned. No title no written agreements. Not knowing the guy who you are giving your car to. All of these are a big red flag. Sorry you got taken, but like I said lesson learned and maybe this will help others to be more aware.

yes, i have a bill of sale

If you never transferred the title to your name then you are probably F'd.

You could apply for a lost title but that alone won't get the car back.

Go to the police department in the area that the theft occurred in(if he took it out of the town/county, your best bet may be to go with state police). Show them the bill of sale, and give them the phone numbers that you used to contact him. If you file Grand Larceny charges, the police can subpeona the phone records from the phone company, and obtain all of the contact information that is associated with the numbers he used. The judge can then issue a warrant and have the individual arrested for the appropriate charge. You can then take that information to civil court and sue, which would be an easy case to win provided you have the right paperwork and are lucky enough to get a police officer that cares enough about your situation to do the paperwork and follow-up properly.
