Windsheild fluid as AI Methanol?
 

Has anybody ever try this? i was looking at some AI kits and some meth kits come with windsheild washer fluid to use, Which is methanol. Is it 100% meth?

using windshield washer fluid is fairly common and works o k assuming your objective is to run a mix.

there are 3 major components in WWF. water, alcohol and soap. apparently the soap does not effect the AI system as i haven't read anyone w that complaint.

the primary problem w WWF is that it comes in differing amounts of water V alcohol. perhaps it is disclosed on the container.... if there is a large swing in the A-W balance it would effect, modestly, your tuning.

i believe Aquamist and Snow sell their own mixtures which i would assume would be soap free and be constant as to mix.

i, personally, wouldn't run the WWF as i don't like the idea of soap going thru my filters and solenoids.

but, based on lots of people using it w good results it does work.

I would think WWF would make more sense over water if you were storing the car over the winter in a colder climate. It isn't as likely to freeze. You don't have to drain the system. And if the issue of soapy buildup bothers you, switch to water in the spring and then back to WWF in the fall before storage.

If the water is not distilled, then besides the soap leaving deposits, you will also have mineral deposits. All bad for the engine.

Some people don't have access to distilled water, or pure methanol, and the closest they can get is $1.20 per liter of contact lens water, and $6.30 per liter of 95% methanol 5% ethanol. 2 liters of winter 40% methanol WWF with no noticeable soap (shaken up and no lasting bubbles) cost $2.05. No blue shows up in pipes, or on spark plugs. Just run a clear mix of the 95% methanol and water every 5-10 tanks to get the stuff cleaned out.

I speak from a Japanese products point of view, so the remnants of what was left in my hot pan test (just barely enough to put color on a paper towel), doesn't mean that the US products will do the same.

I found it very hard to find manufacturers who publish the composition of their WWF.

The best I found was Turbo Power -40 published 51/49 ratio, on a side note it is much lighter than any other WWF sold locally here. Soap quantity unknown.

Most companies are required to leave the MSDS at the store selling them.

If you can't do it correctly, do not do it at all: just spend the money it takes.

80-100 proof volka is distilled water with ethanol, it will work and is cleaner..

The maker of the kit I have has given the green light, and checking pipes and plugs has affirmed what I was told. Intake pipe and IC have been off several times since I started spraying. The turbo isn't even tinted blue. A filter after the tank keeps junk out of the pump and fittings, and cleaning the jets, even though they don't need it, lets me check the spray pattern. Let's agree to disagree.

Given that both the fuel & air an engine sees will not be as clean as windscreen fluid i think it is a bit rich going on about having distilled water for AI. Fair enough you don't want ionic interaction in your cooling system or mineral deposits, but for combustion, seriously, get a life.

zillions of people run WWF w no problems.

FJO's inhouse mule has runs on for 4 years and makes almost 1200 rwhp. a turbo'd V8 Camaro.

they call it bug juice:) i discussed the makeup of WWF w Gerald Oberbuchner (O as in FJO) and they have had no problems whatsoever.

Look at the freezing point listed on the WWF jug, if it's not -35degF or lower the amount of meth is well below 50%. You can easily review this info on the web if you search some of the WWF manufacturer's websites ... the freezing point and the % meth is pretty consistent. Here in Houston they sell WWF rated as high as 35 degF, it has maybe 1-2% meth. They tend to sell lower temp/higher meth stuff in the dead of winter but most places I've seen here never stock the 50/50 WWF.

I use -40C WWF that is about 45% methanol. I have heard of several people in the US ordering a case of Auto Value?(autozone house brand) winter fluid that was 40+% meth. You might try asking the manager if he can get you some. The worst he can say is no. It's cheap, and there shouldn't be anything else in it. There is a excel document floating around somewhere with links to alot of MSDS sheets on WWF. Maybe search for bcblues i think was his user name on another forum.

You can't find sub-freezing rated WWF in California unless you go up to the mountains that has freezing weather. So, for me I'm getting Boost Juice. It's premixed to 49% methanol which makes it legal to ship UPS ground. $30/4 gallons from Summit. ......and no soap in it.

I ran boost juice for a while... Loved it.

I now run boost juice with a mixture of HEET (yellow bottle only!) in it. which is something like 98% Meth. I mixed to to be about 70 meth/30 water.

While this shouldn't be a problem for most (I probably have other issues to look at) I think it's worth revisiting. I'll be testing boost juice for a bit after I make sure my motor is 100% clean of deposits.
