Propper nozzle size and location
 

Hi all AI lovers!

Im about to get my motor togheter in the next few days and i have also ordered a coolingmist stage 1 trunkmount water injection kit with a 150 psi pump.

As i have read all of the sticky threads im pretty much aware of all the benefits of water injection. However, im still a bit confused over the nozzle size i should run.

As im gonna run 100% water this is what i have found out:

When i ordered the coolingmist system i told them i would run 450-500 flywheel hp and they send me the M5 nozzle. Of what i can understand the M5 nozzle flows about 63x5= 315 cc/min at 100 PSI?

And my motor would need about 5,0x63x1,1=346,5 cc/min from what i can understand from Howards sticky thread about nozzle sizing.

My question now is: Is the M5 nozzle too small or just right? Note that im just gonna use water to prevent detonation and not to get more hp.

Im also wondering where to locate the nozzle? Im thinking of putting it right before the OEM elbow. Se pic. Would this location be a good place or not?

And the last question: When i tune, what could i expect when i start using the water? Just lower EGTs or am i even gonna see some differences in AFR?

My setup is: (if this make any difference)

150PSI waterinjection with M5 nozzle
13b REW, mild ported
3mm apex seals
2 extra studs
TB70 turbo with 1,15 A/R hotside (70mm inducer on compressor)
850/1680
3,5" DP

I'm no expert but I have my m3 @220 psi nozzle just a little bit closer to the throttle body, with water alone it lowers (rich) my afr a little bit, but now that i added the methanol it substantially lowers my afr.

no water underboost 11.9~12
with water underboost 10.8~11.
80/20 meth/water underboost 9.6~9.9

i'm not looking at my wideband all the time but every now and then i look at it and I see that.

the nozzle I think should be fine but at m5@150 psi

and yes I need a m5 nozzle

Ok, so maby i need to tap a hole in the elbow then. Nice to hear about the AFR since i didn´t expect it to change =)

What type of water do you use? Destilled or just plain tap water?

Oh, and do you measure EGT? If so, did you see much change in EGT when you started to use water?

no I do not have the egt sensor yet, soon .

Anyone knows what type of water i should use? I can imagine that plain tap water should work just fine?

I use normal tap water, but some people prefer distilled water

I recommend distilled, I used to use filtered tap water (PUR filter) and after a few months of use the inside of my intake parts (pipes, elbow, etc) had a white dusty coating that could be minerals from the water.

Using distilled as well with a 40 micron in-line filter. It's not expensive. I wouldn't use tap water.

Okey? Hmm, i could get destilled water from work but it makes stuff more complicated. Maby its lime? Was it hard to get of the pipes? Dont want anything to get clogged up...

isn't distilled water widely available? we can get it in the US at any supermarket, gas station, everywhere along with spring or filtered drinking water.

I don't think it's enough to clog things up, it looks like water spotting when you wash the car and let the water evaporate. A thin soft whitish residue.

AI is still a little new to me, but it's not the residue plugging the nozzle up that makes me use distilled. It's the deposits I visualize it might leave behind in the combustion chamber over time...like it does when left to evaporate on the hood of your car in the sun after a wash.
Maybe that can't happen...I don't know. :dunno: But distilled is cheap and as mentioned. available almost anywhere.

We can buy it here to in any supermarket or gas station. Its just one more thing that needs to be taken care of. Was hoping to be able to fill the car up with water from the tap in the garage and then just go.

I can buy it from "biltema" for $5,67 per gallon. So its not expensive but just needs to be remembered :-)

Btw, got the coolingmist system today. Gonna pick it up after work. Oh, and i slapped the motor togheter last night :-) Starting to get close for testing!
