Potential problems using wiper fluid

I ended up stripping my greddy elbow recently when taking my nozzle and off to clean it out (which I'll post the results off in another thread) and ended up buying a bung from howerton engineering to fix it...

(They have incredibly awesome stuff there. Like the greddy of water injection)

The nozzle is situated on the elbow in a way that it almost sprays directly into the TB and while taking off my elbow I noticed something disturbing in the TB.

Now I'm guessing this is could be due to the following...

-the many miles (probaly around 2k) I've put on since I've had the kit installed
-the large amount of water/meth the HFS1 + rx7 summer puts out
-the test diagnostic mode I enabled that sprays full force when the car was off

Anyone have any ideas? The good part of this is that I don't think that any of the dried up dye actually goes into the engine unless a chunk of the crystallized dye breaks off and if it does, based on what I've examined, very little goes through. I think the dye crystallizes when the water/meth myst touches a super hot surface.

Anyone else experience this?

My first guess is that it's detergent residue from the washer fluid your using. Second guess...or possibly in combination with the first, is that the brand of washer fluid your using doesn't use distilled water.

It's definitely detergent and dye. I'm thinking about just mixing my own. That poor inlet :(. I'm pretty sure it must be distilled water as well. Everything uses distilled water.

I think maybe the location of the nozzle may be a problem as well. I'm a WI n00b but I would have thought it would be best for the water/meth to vaporize further downstream.

Sorry if I stated the obvious. I guess I didn't understand your question. I think your nozzle location is fine by itself though. That's where mine is at...but I'm only doing water.
Somewhere in this section I remember reading a list of commercially produced windshield washer fluids...and IIRC some didn't use detergents or the amounts were reduced. You might find something in a search.

Mixing your own is always the best rout imo. Its kinda hit or miss being able to find a no or low detergent fluid. Only other option is the snowperformance boost juice but that craps like 8 or 9 bucks a gallon.

Self mixing is cheap and you don't have to worry about any additives though having a few gallons of meth kicking around isn't really the safest thing.

i had the same buildup start to happen to me then i went away from washer fluid and starting mixing on my own.

What kind of build up? Where did you source your chemicals?

AlexG13B 09-11-11 01:48 PM

had blueish tints on throttle body, some build up around nozzles and greddy compression tube. guess it was the dye.
i bought methanol by a jog from a local speed shop and mixed it with distilled water.
was doing 50/50 by weight

Supernaut 09-13-11 12:47 PM

Where did you get your distilled water? Did you just go to the Super market and buy distilled water there?

Sgtblue 09-14-11 07:42 PM

^Local supermarket.....occasionally at the chain drug store. ~ $1 a gallon.

Supernaut 09-14-11 09:44 PM

Yea I picked myself up some yesterday. Was surprised to see it there. Thanks

FYI, the fluid I used failed the suds test (shooked it up and I saw bubbles) so I'm sure detergent is in there as well.

There was this thread which many think it is OK for the commercial junk.
Not me as I always consider any contaminates too much!

I linked in the thread.

My problems may be unique to me though. I'll be testing boost juice and my own mix and see how they compare after I finish my remaining wiper fluid in my tank and after I clean out the residue 100%.
