Always interesting to see different setups, this is off a Champ car, pure Meth of course on one of them....

I am an Indy car fan, just interested in the vintage for this install. In the 70's 80's the 4 cylinder Offenhauser engines ran I think 4-5 boost (for qualifying). Not sure of injector location for those.

What year/engine is this from???

xzl6b1 01-05-10 03:31 PM

typo I meant to say "4-5 bar" ........very high boost level for qualifying only (and engine rebuild after that)

Thats quite new, a Cosworth XD engine, so 1996-1999 and only 5psi boost (well, 4.9 i think)!

I do really really love the turbo Offy engines, have very few pics/info on them though, would love more if you knew any good links.

I have seen many Offy engines yrs back but lately you dont see them. I donno why!

best bet is Wikipedia , Offenhauser engines, not many pix tho.

Weird how things dissapeir! the first real race car i ever heard was an Offy midget.1500c.

TRUE the sound of an Offy four makes is awesome sound, all four into one open exhaust, turbo didnt have quite the same sound tho, course lot more power

Honda builds great race engines...........interesting feature that the efi injected preturbo (chemical intercooling), I will have to read more if you have a link. I assume they ran individual port injection as well of course.

one of many links
my dad was an Indy driver in 1946-49. The first year 1946, he drove a Studebaker race engine , which failed to qualfy. In 1947-1949 he qualified with an Offy, it was superior to almost anything else back then, in terms of both hp and reliability (alcohol fuel, normally aspirated, mechanical fuel injection 4 valves/cyl, monoblock). They ran exotic fuels (cheated) in qualifying, part of the game.
The neat thing about the Offy was it's "monoblock" design, integral head/combustion chamber/block ....... ie no head gasket. Made valve jobs interesting, as special tooling was required. The block/crankcase halves met/bolted together at the main bearing centerline, it was extremely strong. The compromise, the monoblock restricted valve geometry because of this.
In the 80's these engines were still being run at huge boost pressures and HP. They were competitive until the Cosworth V8 arrived.........

geez I meant Cosworth (not Honda in the reply above).......

I havent got a link unfortunately, but yeah, they also ran 2 injectors per cyl in the normal places, that 4 pre turbo was as they didnt run an intercooler :)

Good link/info too, thanks :)
