and is it cheaper that gasoline?

right now its more expesnive not to mention a hassle to get hydrogen.

Um there is pretty much no way your going to get it to work if your asking the question....

Dude, cmon.

The Hydrogen Renesis makes 100HP and gets less than 100 miles per tank, I think (but not certain) the mileage is pretty poor comparatively to unleaded gas plus Hydrogen takes up something like 4 times the space of the current fuels we use.

yes I saw this on a Sport Compact Car mag. They showed it on the Tokyo auto show not too long ago. From what it looks like it runs on both:confused:

There was a Hydrogen rotary on the cover of Popular Mechanics about 10 yrs ago. I'm not saying it isn't possible but I am saying it would be FAR from an easy conversion.

Gasoline is so simple to transport and store and has such good "energy density" that at this point you just can't beat it. Your hydrogen tank will have like 2000psi in it, imagine what type of fuel lines you'll have for that. Not to mention filling up at the "pumps".

hydrogen may be the future of cars but it shure as hell isnt going to do the environment much better. for the first long while that hydrogen is being introduced, large fuel burning hydrogen plants will produce it and polute the environment still. untill a "Green" power sorce is found to produce it, hydrogen wont help much

Hydrogen IS the future of cars...the very very near future. Alternative Energy has prototypes and patents on hydrogen cars. They run off water and are very cheap to run...as for converting a fd....I don't know how possible/easy that would be. Either way, look for hydrogen cars very soon (possibly this summer...??)

You can't run an engine off water. You run it on hydrogen which travels through an anode, creates electricity and then passes through a cathode where it mixes with ambient air to emit pretty much only water vapor and CO2.

And the main hurdle other than converting our petroleum based economy to hydrogen is storage. If you get into an accident with only hydrogen stored in the trunk, you're going to experience a mini hindenburg incident. The most promising storage idea is coming from Toyota where they are filling the 'gas' tanks with inert methanol and breaking down the hydrogen out of that.

yes, but to electrolyze water, you must use a lot of electricity, and that isn't cheap especially when many many more electricity generation plants will need to be built to support a large supply of hydrogen. does anyone know if we have any other real alternatives to mass hydrogen production than electrolysis?

The H+ ions are the main problem. Keep in mind that while H2 + (N2+O2) can produce H2O (water vapor), it can also produce NO (Nitric Oxide) and HNO3 (nitric acid). Acid rain isn't such a great by-product. ;)

Separating Hydrogen from whatever compound you use can actually be just as harmful as regular gas emissions. Don't believe everything that you hear about Hydrogen.

And water vapor isn't the only after product of combustion hydrogen.

It's just like all of the Greenpeace morons in Cali who were/are demanding electric cars, claiming they don't pollute. Where in the hell do they think the electricity for the cars is coming from? Windmills?
