Xcessive LIM and CJ Motor Sports Fuel Rail
I do my best to solve my own problems and do my research but I am out of my comfort zone on this one and need some help. I am hoping someone has already solved this. I am tring to re-assemble my car using a CJ Motor sports primary and secondary fuel rail set up. I have an Xcessive LIM and have discover the mounting bolts and support posts that attach the secondary rail to the LIM are hitting the AN fittings on both ends of the primary fuel rail. I was not even able to tighten the LIM for fear of damaging something. No way I would be able to install the fuel lines.
To be clear the owner of CJ Motor sports told me he was aware of fitment problems with some Xcessive LIMs. Leave it to me to be one of the unlucky ones. The guy at CJ said something about having the LIM milled (I think) but I do not have enough understanding to take it to a machine shop and communicate what I would need done. If you have solved this or know enough to tell me what I would need to ask a shop to do it would be most helpful. Please be specific enough so that I could explain the instructions to the shop clearly enough for them to do what was needed. I hope someone out there can help! Thanks RD |

Sounds like you are going to have to try and figure out how much and where material needs taken on the LIM to allow it to bolt up correctly. That is what you will need to communicate to the machine shop. OR you could sand/grind down the area yourself. If you have to take too much off, it is propably in your best interest to go with another fuel rail or back to the stock LIM.
Did CJmotorsports have any suggestions on what other customers had done other than simply saying the LIM would have to be machined? I had issues with my secondary KG rail bolting up properly, but I was able to modify the rail mounts themselves (not the LIM or the rail) for it to bolt up properly. Another FYI if you did not already know this, with the new LIM it will shift everything attached to it forward a little ways. You will need to modify the oil filler neck, and the right most bracket that attaches the UIM/TB to the motor. You may already know this, but just a heads up incase you did not. |
What injectors are you using?
I was using ID injectors and removed the extensions from the primary injectors. Here is an excerpt from my build thread.

How did you figure the messurement you used to shorten the primary mounts? Do you happen to have that number in your notes or in your head? I just removed the spacers and put the rail on and measured the distance from the center iron to the bottom of the rail. Then cut the difference off of the spacers and the bolts. I do not remember the number. I am sure with some searching one could find the exact difference in length.

What i did was secure the primary rail, and attach the hoses to it, and make them secure. I then secured the secondary rail. The flat part of the spacer needs to face towards the primary rail. The an fittings help prevent the spacers from rotating.

Hope this helps a little. Mine interfered so bad, even with the hoses off, the LIM would not mate up flat against the engine block. If I put the hoses on it would have been worse, I think if I tightened it up that way, something would break. Guess there is definitely some inconsistencies with the casting of the LIM. |

I took my diffusers out. Dont need them breaking off. The ID injectors atomize so well they are not needed.

I know this is an old post, but I had this problem when I installed mine in 09 or 10, I don't remember for sure when it was. The only difference was that on mine it was just the front part of the engine, not the back. The mounting bolt for the secondary was pressing against the fitting to the front of the primary rail. What I eventually did was take a LIM gasket to a water jet guy and had him waterjet a couple for me. I then put a gasket on either side of the spacer, and it spaced the LIM out about 1/8". It's worked great for me for several years. If anyone is interested in a spacer I can get one made, probably for about $40 or so, I don't remember exactly.
My only problem now is I'm about to install an EFR 8374 and the Turblown cast manifold, and from what I've been told I have to either grind the outside of the LIM or take some material off the flange where it bolts to the engine to find another 1/8" of space between turbo and LIM, and since I already have the LIM spaced out 1/8" now I'll have to find 1/4" of space. I've thought of having C brackets made for the CJ rails, similar to how the KG parts brackets were. My only concern then would be making sure the two extra injectors in the middle of the secondary rail won't hit the primary rail. |
