WTF did i get?

ok for v-day my girl bought me a 93 R1. Great! now i know what shes expecting though:( anyhow I got one. I dont rerally know the history of it but......heres what i know. the friend of the owner said he put a 99 motor and tranny in it,and he got a bunch of parts for it but sold it all becuase he had a baby. well it came with 99 tail lights, 99 bumper lights, stering coulum, bummper supports, rear bumber, misc pipes u-bends, 3 ecus, new looking wire harness for the motor. and some misc junk, in the back of the car. so cool. but as im taking apart the car to do a full build up. im noticing that the manifold doesnt have that mushroom gold looking thing EGR vavlve under it. it also has a jdm y pipe and the turbos look brand new and so do most of the parts. inside the DP, the manifold, the turbos, the water pumpand the piping, theres no build up. so hmmmm.

i worked on hondas and did motor swaps for years and shit, i would think my 93 being obd1 and the 99 motor being obd2b wouldnt run with the wire harness. well thats hondas but someone enlighten me on that. so as i get under the car i see the shipping marks on the tranny, oil pan and turbos it reads out some japanese stuff "ÿBUæê¿œ 99 æ R FD3S¤&Ô" ok hmmmmmmmm.........
the 3 ecus say NA3A3 NA3A1 NA7A3.....wtf did i end up getting? it kinda sucks but overall the car was in great condition, it was hit in the front. no big deal. but other than that, can some one explain? OH yea forgot, the DP is huge and it looks like a factory piece but no cats, no heat shields, no silencer, all the way out the back. looks a little bigger than stock would be, but its unfinished metal with the flanges welded on the inside like stock.

appearently i got a mystery car. i dont know what im talking about. can someone help? Im asking for answers not flames......

You can spend a lot of time online getting advice a piece at a time or take the car to someone to check it out. Sounds like you have a mixture of j-spec stuff, which may be OK, but as you will soon find out, the FD is not a Honda and seemingly minor problems which would allow other cars to still run will sideline the RX-7 or make it run like crap. Do a search for a rotary shop near you and drag the thing there to have it evaluated. My $0.02.

Take pics so people can see what you are talking about. Thats awesome that you go it for V-day. I wish I had a girlfriend like that.

RobertoMartinez 02-28-04 08:29 PM

yea, im thankfull i got her. shes been good to me, i have pictures of it i just cant down size them to fit on here. someone help me with that? anywho, i talked to some people out here and they say to upgrade to a single turbo set up. i kinda like that fact that i have the spec r turbos and would like to see what i can get out of them but he says i wont be impressed. so i think its gonna be the single turbo. a t-60. im only looking for like 350 hp, but somewhat reliable. ill prolly drive it 4 times a week. I only work 5 min away from home and its all side streets so no traffic. and the occasional cruize or what not. i think im on the right track with a motor rebuild, and a haltech and a hks manifold. but i guess im gonna be selling the rest of what i dont need which is gonna be the turbos, the DP and what ever else.

Im wondering how hard its gonna be to reinstall the A/C on the car. It has no lines or condensor or filter. but has the compressor. and this air pump you guys speak of. WTF is that for? emmisions shit? I dont have problems when it comes to that. so i can get rid of that? and thats the pump on the top right when looking at the motor? i want my engine bay to be as un-cluttered as possible.

There's probably 3 hours' worth of reading there, should help you with a lot, also plenty of pics so you can maybe start to get a feel of what RX-7's will look like inside. I'm pretty new to RX-7's, but those two sites have helped me a lot.

To post pictures on here, you'll probably need to compress them down to 100 kB or smaller. If you can't get that working, email them to me scotty305@hotmail.com , I'll resize and post them for you.

Does she have a sister that likes broke college students, or is that just a pipe dream....Oh well, great gift, welcome to the world of rotaries. I don't know where you are, but there are several shops around the US that specialize in rotaries that can help you out an immense amount. The websites scotty305 listed are great, I suggest you read and re-read the articles there, and of course, search the forum (as you probably already know), otherwise, good luck, it sounds like you have a vision of what to do with the car, I'm looking forward to see your project come along. :rlaugh:

Those two links got me through at least a year with the car. LOTS of great advice in there.

scotty305 02-29-04 11:30 AM

I'm no expert, but the rust on that car looks like a bad omen to me. I would recommend finding someone nearby you who has a lot of experience with FD's , and becoming very good friends with them.

Good luck to you.

Pretty good info. I went through them last night. thanks for that. Well first things first. I have to finish, removing everything under the hood. Do you have to push and pull on the motor to seperate the clutch fork or something like that? im going to hook up a hoist to the motor and break the bolts around it and yank it out. but im under the impressin its not that easy. in the mean time i have to get the rest of my body parts from mazda. i hate going there, everytime i do they try to sell me some shit........

oh yea..the rust. when the previous owner had it, his coolant hose exploded and got alll over the engine bay, thus causing rust. on the chasis the battery exploded. the rust that you see is mostly on the engine parts, the pulley and some misc componets. the only place rust was present on the chasis is now gone. the fender had a rust patch on it, but its gone now. it was up top. In vegas rust doenst exist. the car came from colorado, but it was never driven in colorado. i took it to my friends body shop who looked at it and he said no problem. personally ive seen almost every piece of work this guy does and he is by far the best in town, he did all my other cars, so im leaping that hurdle for the moment. running twoard the motor but having a feeling im gonn eat shit! LOL

i dont think thats a efini y pipe. It looks like a 93 Y pipe. 94-95 were black.

RobertoMartinez 02-29-04 12:02 PM

hmmm........ill take a pic of it and show it to you guys and you can tell me whats what............sound good? apperantly im lost......thanks

/quote i dont think thats a efini y pipe. It looks like a 93 Y pipe. 94-95 were black. /quote

what are you talking about? i dont see the ypipe in that picture .. unless youre referring to the crossover tube

also wheres your pressure chamber?

RobertoMartinez 02-29-04 03:08 PM

thats what i was thinking. the crossover is metal if its jdm and ,the y pipe, is under all that crap. all you can see is the coupler for the y pipe.... pressure chanber? wheres that at?

PVerdieck 02-29-04 03:44 PM

Looking below the strut tower brace, you are missing a black plastic piece,.

It is kind of hidden by the strut tower brace in this pic:

LUCKY GUY! "NOW WHERE'S THE RING?!"

RobertoMartinez 02-29-04 07:59 PM

oh yea that big plastic box with all the nipples on it. yea i took that off as i was starting to take it apart, i also removed the one by the oil fill neck too. I dont think that im gonna have to use that when i finish the single tubo setup and a stand alone. right? im also pretty sure that the rats nest with all 6000 sensors and that spaghetti bowl full of vacum lines is gonna have to go. i have a ring, a nice ring too, its TCW is 3.25 ct and the top diamond is 1.50 ct, its nice set in platinum. i was gonna get white gold but sometimes they turn back to yellow gold. just havent popped the question yet. maybe i should wait untill im done with the car.

this is cool, today she got me a TiAL 50mm blow off valve, and apex turbo timer. I think she calls my distributors and talks to them and orders me shit. its cool. but maybe and can get her to buy me the turbo!!!!!! lol i dont think shed spend that much. lol sorry guys, she doesnt have a sister but she has 2 brothers.....so if you want in let me know lol.

xthaboy17 02-29-04 08:04 PM

Yea i am referring to the plastic piece on top of the ypipe most efini ones i seen are metal. Correct me if i am wrong

xthaboy17 02-29-04 08:07 PM

by the way what hooks up to the stock airbox on the side. Whats it for? Thanks

apexkw 02-29-04 10:14 PM

This is the best way to seperate the tranny after you removed all the covers, starter, slave, and the 7 or so bolts on the bellhousing holding it to the engine:

Remove both inspection plates on the bellhousing.
Remove the clutch slave and let it dangle by the line.
Stick your hand in the top inspection hole and pull back on the release fork.
While holding it like that, look in the lower hole with a light and you should see that the collar is pressed into the pressure plate now.
Stick a long flathead screwdriver in there between the bearing and the collar... while releasing the pulling force on the release fork with your other hand. The collar will stay in the pressure plate, and the release bearing will come out of it.

If you do this right, it should be disconnected.

I don't think that's 99 spec thing.

first of all, 99 spec ecu is n3g1 something..

na31 or 7 are all 92-95 model.

In japan, there are 6 types of FD.

the 1st-3rd type are same as us-spec using 8 bit ECU.

and, 4th type use 16 bit ECU and 5-6 type use 32 bit ECU.

Beside after 4th type, they began to use e-finy type y-pipe.

sorry, I think you're scammed.

cagefreak 03-01-04 11:54 AM

oh cool, I thought I was the only one. I know it's a bit off topic but my lady bought me an FD as well. 93 Touring. It's waaaay dirty in the pics but it's been cleaned since then.
