Wrap or Paint 99 spec side skirts
 

So the car is going in for a whole new paint job soon. The painter says he is willing to spray the OEM 99 spec side skirts but I don’t think he knows what he is in for. I tried explaining the material to him and he doesn’t seem to have any concerns. I imagine he is planning to just do basic prep, prime and coat. He isn’t going to charge any more to do the skirts but I have this feeling I’m going to get a phone call once he dives into it.



My options:

1. Leave the skirts as is with the vinyl wrap
2. Have the painter “attempt” to paint them and hope for the best
3. Buy the 99 spec clone 1 piece sideskirts and have those painted at no additional cost. Sell or keep the vinyl wrapped OEM ones.

The fact someone was able to wrap them is pretty amazing. I wouldn't take the chance with getting them painted. The 99 skirts that shine sells would be a better option

I had my 99 side skirts painted some time back. They were fully installed on the car at the time they were painted. Within 6 months there were cracks on the paint on them then later I had some paint chipping off.

The material is such a weird foam that it's really hard to paint. I believe when they are new they aren't really painted, the color is molded into the material.

Quite possible there is a way to get paint to stick to them, but for me I'll be replacing them with fiberglass side skirts when the time comes.

Thanks for the input guys. I didn't want to go through the hassle only to more than likely come out with badly painted parts. I figured once the painter starts on it there's going to be an adder regardless on what was promised so I might as well use the money on new skirts that will have a more guaranteed finish.

It was hard to pull the trigger on $400 side skirts when there is a functional set on the car but a couple of beers and late night ebaying fixed that. I ended up getting the Vsaero/Carbonfiberhood ones. Interestingly I found a set of 1 piece polyurethane ones being sold by KBD on carID's website. I wonder if they are the same mold.
