Would You buy this FD?

I think I've found the perfect deal, but overall it sounds so shady, i need some of your opinions.

So this dude had this FD for sale, he wanted 20k for it. Last week he diminished the price to 15k so I went to his place to check the car out. The car is so mint, not a trace of carbon or rust on the engine, suspensions, wheels, nowhere. Plus the car only has 20k KM's, I asked him what's up with that and he told me that the car had been stolen long time ago and striped of everything, so the previous owner rebuilt it all, including a brand new 13b. Of course it got me interested so I ran a Carfax and, as expected, it showed the salvage and rebuilt title issued, irregular odometer readings, amongst other things, I will post the carfax. I also Emailed the NICB (national insurance crime bureau) to see if infact the car had previously been reported stolen. Heres where it became shady, i got this in response : "Thank you for your inquiry to the NICB. The VIN you have provided to us has been run in our database and shows no record of being reported stolen. NICB has no further information on this vehicle; theft status is all we provide" So the dude told me the car got stolen and rebuilt thats why it's so mint and the NICB tells me the car has never been stolen? I also know that in some states, including NJ, they issue salvage titles to damaged cars AND stolen cars so that might explain it.

No. I would not buy a salvage title car for 15k, no matter how clean it is it still carries a mark that destroys its value. Its a clean looking car but there could be so many things wrong you cannot see, and even if everything IS perfect, its still not worth 15k, offer him 9 max.

Noxlupus 05-29-07 01:14 PM

even though it got a salvage title because it was stolen and not because it was damaged?

cabaynes 05-29-07 01:28 PM

Before you do anything you should check with your insurance company about insuring a salvage title car. Some companies wont, and others will only offer you liability coverage and none on the actual vehicle. For that reason alone I wouldnt ever consider a salvage car. No matter how clean it is, problems that you can't see and won't see until you have more time with the car will come back to bite you in the ass.

fd3s_jerry 05-29-07 01:29 PM

have you ever heard the phrase "drive it like you stole it?" there's a reason they total them out. and, yeah, with a salvage title, it's not worth it. less than 10k, tops.

plus it's a 93, with a clean title they go for like 13-14k, not 15 for a salvage. I'm not saying don't buy one, just not THAT one!

rotarymandan 05-29-07 02:55 PM

Don't risk it 2JZ-13B-RB26.

HKNY 05-29-07 03:07 PM

Nope

cletus 05-29-07 03:28 PM

Another thing to point out is that the tach does not appear to be from a '93. But that could have been replaced. Also, I could be wrong, but that sorta appears like there is a passenger airbag in the 1st picture. Hard to tell though.

Monkman33 05-29-07 03:29 PM

i wouldn't even offer him 9 without lots of paperwork proof of everything he is claiming. simple as that.

salvage titles will burn you hardcore, between resale and insurance companies.

9k with docs (reciepts, etc...) would be the only way I would buy it... less without.

The Driver 05-29-07 03:29 PM

I would have bought Jayspec7's 7 for the money but 15K for that hellllll nooooo!

2JZ-13B-RB26 05-29-07 05:28 PM

Alright thanks guys, just to clarify, I'm from Canada, so the prices might be a bit higher over here, that's why I thought 15k was reasonable. When I went to see the car, he refused to negotiate the 15k he wanted, so I doubt he'll accept for 9k. Oh well, I'll keep the money and get a clean title one instead.

RE-Amemiya7 05-29-07 05:41 PM

salvage title? $15k? .....................hell no!

chris7777777 05-29-07 09:30 PM

I agree.............That is Definetely a passenger side airbag.......which did not come on 1993's........and Definetely a 1994 car's tach. 1993 had all the ticks filled in between each hash. So why was it changed...?? and why is the car listed on Carfax as a 93.......Is the whole front end a 1994 now ?? who really knows.....I doubt I would buy it for any price.

Where in Canada are you located bud ??

2JZ-13B-RB26 05-29-07 10:20 PM

I'm in Montreal.

As for the car, ya he did tell me about the 94' parts, his story was that the car got stolen and stripped of everything, and the owner rebuilt it thats why it has a rebuilt title and 94 parts. But I dont know what to believe. Ima just let this go, it's too bad because it's such a clean car.

I sold my salavged CYM FD for $22k and a few others for $11-15k. Check the sig. There is NO way that you could reproduce my CYM for anywhere close to that.

OTOH that FD has been wrecked. Post some pics straight on the engine bay. I noticed that the engine compartment paint is flat black, that is not stock...

2JZ-13B-RB26 05-29-07 11:51 PM

Unfortunatly i do not have straight up engine bay pics. It's a possibility that the car was wrecked but theres no mention about any frame damage in the carfax report. about the engine bay color, it might have been repainted when he installed the new engine.

BTW that CYM is smokin, man so gorgeous

RX7LINK 05-30-07 03:17 PM

no i wouldn't

+1 to those that said "no way"!

15k you can buy one with clean title and still in same or good condition.

donz 05-30-07 06:40 PM

the thing is he is located in Canada. Fd's for some reason cost a small fortune up here. I am tallking like 15-16 Canadian for a pretty beat up 93. By pretty beat up I mean possible rust, definately original engine and definately over 150000km.

I'm looking for an FD, and everyone seems to suggest get a clean one, and save in the long run.

Nat6c 05-30-07 06:56 PM

Not to hijack thread. but I may sell mine =-) lol. might seem a little pricey. but it's basically to break even for everything i've spent. pm me if at all interested.

it's just a testing waters thread hehe.

Carfax is nice to look at but by NO MEANS does it tell the car's entire history. On FDs there are little cloth covers over some holes. These are pretty much never replaced when someone works on the body. If they are missing you can pretty much tell from photos if the car has been worked on. They are a good rule of thumb.

nmoffatt 06-01-07 02:34 PM

I'm from Montreal and went to look at this car as well. After looking the car over closely I passed on it for 3 reasons:

1) Paint. If you scrape away some of the paint with your fingernail under the hood you will see red paint. (Both fenders as well). The front bumper paint looks like it will flake off soon. In general I found the repaint job to be quite poor.

2) Misc interior pieces missing.

3) Under boost there was a pretty bad whistle. Not sure what it was but at that point I decided I was not interested.

I really got a bad feel about this. The story I was told did not make sense from what I was seeing on the car. He said he could get 15K on a trade and I advised him to take it would be difficult to get that much on the street.

PM me if you want to talk more.

Thanks, unfortunately i coudnt test drive it. As I said his story was shady, he did say the car was never damaged but 1994 parts amongst other things suggested me otherwise. He also told me a dealer wanted to give him 15k but he wants to sell it on the street. For the person who asked me a straight engine shot I finally got one.
