won't start
 

Hey Guys,

Just bought a gen 3 here in Japan and can't get the damn thing started. Tried the tech tips for a gen 2 car with 'Short Start' problems but to no avail.
Any tips for a gen 3?
Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Can you give us any more info? Does the engine turn over? Does it just click and do nothing? More info please!!

The engine is turning over and occassionally I get a splutter but that's it. I've tried the technique described in the manual by cranking engine for 5 sec. with the gas pedel to the floor then stop. Crank again with no accelerator and it should start.
I also read a tech tip for the 2nd gen rx7 where you need to remove the EGI fuse and crank for 15 sec with foot flat to the floor and then replace fuse and crank again.
Neither of these options worked.
I'm getting a strong smell of fuel like the engine is flooded so it doesn't seem to be a fuel flow problem. There's spark too so that's not it unless the plugs are saturated with gasoline.

I guess next step is pulling plugs.

Does this provide a clearer picture?

...sounds like it's flooded. do a search in the forum for "flooded engine". there are many threads about how to get it started.

here's one common procedure you'll find if you search:

(1) pull plugs // clean or replace
(2) pull fuel pump fuse
(3) crank it for about 15-30 secs with plugs out
(4) put about an ounce of automatic transmission fluid into each rotor (thru plug openings) // this is a real trick to do
(5) reinstall plugs
(6) reinstall fuel pump fuse
(7) crank it up // it should start, but it'll smoke for a bit until it burns out all of the ATF

i just wrote that from memory, so i may have left out a step or two. do the search and you should find something similar. if it doesn't work the first time, try it again.

Thanks guys.
After 4 days of half hearted efforts I finally went the whole hog by adding the oil through the plug holes. Ended up using 2 stoke oil as I figured it'll burn off cleaner. Popped plugs back in and reconnected a fully charged battery and instantly I was getting a more possitive result. Still was very spluttery initially but finally picked up. I think the important point was the oil to build compression as I'd tried pulling plugs numerous times with no possitive result.
Makes me wonder if the compression is down on my car. It's an auto with 50,000miles on the clock or is it the cold?
