Wish upon a star - new Rx-7

How many of you would go out to a dealer and buy a new FD these days if you could get them for what they sold for back in 93-94? What was it about $32k?

neofreak 12-26-06 02:07 PM

Of course.

jic 12-26-06 02:07 PM

id buy a chaste white base model at the dealers new in 95 :D

neofreak 12-26-06 02:08 PM

I have a 95 Chaste White base if you want one.

bryant 12-26-06 02:37 PM

id buy a 94 r2

RX7 RAGE 12-26-06 02:40 PM

I'd buy a Silverstone '95 R2. :)

manveru 12-26-06 02:45 PM

i'd find that pearl white 94

pianoprodigy 12-26-06 03:10 PM

From what I remember they were selling in the $40ks when they were discontinued in the US. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Blackadde/// 12-26-06 04:21 PM

I would have never bothered buying my 350z. :(

RE-Amemiya 12-26-06 04:26 PM

I def. would, but i'd pick up a SSM instead of VR, and an R1 instead of Touring.

+1

I doubt I'd be able to afford it or the insurance if it were new.

I would do it again.

I purchased my FD 12 years ago. MSRP was $41,355.00 for the touring model. Discounted, I paid $36.5K plus tax & license.

Also, I got my FC in 1988 for $13.5K with the SC package.

XxMerlinxX 12-26-06 04:50 PM

I dream about being able to do just that.

darkphantom 12-26-06 04:52 PM

ill take the spirit r for sure

its nice that you still have that tag that you got with the car. Make sure you laminate it so it stays in good condition

compuskills 12-26-06 04:56 PM

Actually the better question would be if you would buy it for the adjusted 2006 dollar amount.

aoc007 12-26-06 05:32 PM

VR 95 R2, damn. A car with none of the little 14 year old car problems and defects!

bursty 12-26-06 05:44 PM

I wonder if they would offer an LS1 as an upgrade option....:)

Not quite. I bought mine new in 1994 for $35,000. Black touring model.

Then it wouldn't be an RX-7... i.e: Rotary Experiment Seven.....

MR_Rick 12-26-06 06:01 PM

Even thoug i remember back on 93 when I walked into a Mazda dealer and saw my first FD. It was siitng there inside the showroom floor with an aura around it. It was a White one, touring model. I fell in love that day.

But I would take a CYM.

that would be like buying a 911 turbo and putting a EVO engine in it.

Presicely. The premise of the thread starter question is flawed. It would be like asking would you have bought a brand new FD in '93 for $25,000 ?

The truth is, due to exchange rates and other factors, the cars were overpriced for their market segment when new, which is a major reason why they failed.

As to the $40,000 mark, it's true. Mine listed for over $40,000 in 1995, but RX-7's weren't selling, so anyone who bought one without a deep discount was a fool. I got $5,000 off on mine. I see another poster did the same. Now you know the true market value of the car back in '94 - '95.

In a heartbeat, 94 R2 was purchased for $29,900 gross less 3k in August of 94 - traded in my FC- could not sell them for anything in PA. Just sitting on the lots - never understood it. Perhaps Mazda will see the light and bring back the RX-7...

A typical business standard (and gov'r too) escalation rate on parts and labor is 3% per year. Just for curiosity, I ran an excel spreadsheet model calculating the 1994 price of 36.5K out to 2006 dollars and the equivalent price would be......$53,600!

Ummmm.....as much as we all love the FD....I seriously doubt any of us would buy it for that money.

arghx 12-26-06 07:23 PM

http://www.westegg.com/inflation <---- uses the Consumer Price Index to calculate inflation.

What cost $36500 in 1994 would cost $46592.91 in 2005.

Also, if you were to buy exactly the same products in 2005 and 1994,
they would cost you $36500 and $28593.40 respectively.

That's with the discounts. It's about the cost of a C6 today. The sticker price posted on the first page, in today's dollars, is $52758. So in today's terms, an FD cost somewhere between a C6 and maybe a fully loaded Boxster S.
