windshield wiper removal

My wipers need painting because they faded in the sun and some of the paint is off. I tried to take them off by taking off the nut at the base of the wiper but they wont come off. The rear one wont even move at all, but the front ones can spin, but neither can come off. Does anyone know how to take these off? I tried looking at the shop manual but it was no help and i searched and couldnt find anything. Thanks for your help.

Fold the wiper arm with the hood popped up and the arm will mysteriously come off easily. Careful not chipping your hood. When putting it back, don't mix the L and R sides or else you'll damage the hood as the arms are not equally long. Test the wipers to make sure they work when you need them.

BTW, get some rain X if you don't have it already. It'll make your wipers operate better.

rainx is a gift from god.

scratchjunkie 03-20-03 09:43 PM

after you unbolt that nut, you need to wiggle it pretty hard to get them out. use more muscel!

NoFriends26 03-20-03 10:36 PM

hmm... i actually put quite a bit of muscle into the rear one and im not that weak. Ill try again tomorrow, but anyon have any other ideas?

I will try that for the front ones and see what happens tomorrow. Thanks.

mines came off easily :D perhaps you need to hit them with a bit of pb blaster or something

Rain-X is awesome stuff, until you start noticing the crap that it leaves on your windshield, and the speed that it makes wiper blades go bad. Use it if you want to though. I just happen to be very picky about glass being perfectly clear (minus tint).

majikeye 03-21-03 02:59 AM

im the same way about my windshield. i dont think you are wiping the excess off good enough when you apply. i use rain x all the time with no trouble at all, i dont even have the slightest amount of film. wipers seem to last longer too. might want to check the directions again.

Not sure if you're serious about the PB blaster. Not a good idea. It discolors black plastic parts.

Where would i buy the actual wiper arm, and how much would it cost? I dont need just the blade. Mazda?

I just took mine off and left them off. I never drive in the rain, If I get caught I have rain-x on just in case. The car looks so much cleaner to me without the wipers.

suprfast 03-21-03 10:41 PM

i dont have wipers on mine. i use rain X and put it on about every 2 months to be on the safe side. water beads right off. if you are crazy dude like my buddy he took out the whole wiper assembly, linkage, motor. it never sees the rain and i guess he is looking at shaving a pound anywhere. for those that are about to critisize on his weight reduction, dont. he has two boxes in his garage that weight close to 50-60lbs worth of crap. this is not to mention the weight he saved after removing smog pump, changing exhausts, midpipe, downpipe. it all adds up, but you have to start somewhere

sure will

YEAH FOLD THE ARM

Painting the wiper arm is cheap and a whole replacement arm is pretty expensive from dealer.

Looks like a few people have mentioned it but just in case you don't understand....

For the rear one just take off the little cover to get to the bolt, take off the bolt, then fold the wiper away from the glass like you do when washing it, lift straight up on the lower part and it will come right off. You can't take the wiper off when it is fully extended and touching the rear glass or you will strip the threads.

I also painted the base of where the wiper goes into the rear hatch. On every FD that I have seen that part is nasty and is a gray saltly looking color. Just tape it off really really well and put newspaper on almost the entire back of the car.

i was lazy and called these guys http://www.mazdaformance.com and i think they wanted like 85 bucks each, or something like that. so i decided to paint them. the car looks better imo w/o the wipers.
