Windshield Wiper Problems

Got caught out in the rain in the FD the other day, and noticed the intermittent wiper function no longer works... When I got home, I did a bit of troubleshooting with the help of the Body Electric Manual (BEM). Here's a summary of what functions work/don't work:
  • "One touch" wiper sweep: Works fine.
  • Low Speed Wipers: Works fine
  • High Speed Wipers: Wipers operate, but only a smidge faster than low speed.
  • Intermittent Wipers: Wipers operate at a fixed speed (same as Low speed, best as I can tell), with no change to the wiper speed when I play with the speed setting switch from min to max
  • Auto park: works perfectly per BEM; parks the wipers when turning off the wipers from any speed/INT or after a "one touch" sweep.
From what I'm reading in the BEM, it looks like I'll need to find a new or good used combo switch to fix this issue. Though if the switch can be taken apart, I suspect my issue can be fixed by replacing the intermittent wiper relay which is internal to the combo switch. Combo switches are NLA new, and used ones may be tough to find.

Has anyone attempted to repair the wiper functions in these switches? I've found a few posts about fixing the headlight switch functions in the combo switch, but haven't found anything yet on fixing the wipers

Combo switch part #'s

Related to replacing the combo switch, as indicated in the Mazda parts diagram below, they list 2 different part #'s for the switch with the apparent distinction between them being that the revision "E" part notes "W/O Sun Roof", and the "D" part notes "Sunroof".

After diving into the FSM schematics I can't find ANY electrical connections between the sunroof wiring and the combo switch (which does windshield wipers/washers, headlights & turn signals). Assuming either of these part #'s are still available new, would it matter if I used a "D" or "E" version?

in 1993 the sunroof means Touring package, which has a rear wiper.
in 1994-1995 it would say with glass roof, which is Touring package which is the one with the rear wiper.

Had to replace my clock spring for my touring and when I contacted my dealer, I was told I'd have to buy the whole combo switch as they don't sell the clock spring separate. At that point there were only 5 new touring combo switches left in the US, all of them at Frank Boucher Mazda. This was back in 2022, so who knows if they still have any. I had to call the parts manager (surprisingly difficult to get ahold of the man) to even put in the order since my local dealer couldn't get it transferred to them due to how old FBM's inventory system was IIRC, so that might increase the odds of there still being 1 or 2 left on the shelves. Otherwise I think you're just going to have to figure out how to dissect you combo switch and check all your connections.

That makes sense, in a Mazda logic sort of way

My FD started life as a '93 USDM touring package, so it HAD the rear wiper, and the FD04-66-120D switch would be the correct one. BUT the car's PO removed the rear wiper and put a non-wiper rear hatch on the car when he painted it. So now I'm wondering if the FD01-66-120E (w/o sunroof) switch will work? Time to dive into the wiring diagrams to see if the connectors are compatible and not pinned differently between the two switches.
