Will it hurt to put a different muffler on my FD?
 

I have a bone stock 93 base model FD. I'm low on funds right now, My stock mazda muffler is really bad, it has a couple of holes in it and a big metal patch welded on. My question is.....I have a couple of powertech mufflers sitting in my room that are just collecting dust, they are SS with a straight through design. Will cutting off the stock muffler and replacing it with this one damage my car. I really don't think it will cause the car to run lean, but I'm no rotary expert by any means. Thanks.

I think the answer you are looking for is that it will not hurt your car.

Just take a good look at the existing set up and think it all through before you cut, or take anything off. You may run into some obstables
trying to match up pipes, hangers, the inlet, and the like. Usually putting any sort of universal muffler on a car will require some degree of fabrication.

thanks for all the input so far, I'm not real worried about the fabrication though, I've done it several times on other cars, everything is alright, but I'm not sure if it will effect the car or not as far as running lean. Thanks

no, it won't run lean or anything. you'll be fine.


just make sure you don't end up burning your bumper because you didn't put your tip in the right place. :)

Get the dimensions of the stock muffler and compare the dimensions of the muffler/piping of the one you're gnona put on. That way you'll know where to cut the pipe and weld it on. You only need one hanger for the muffler so i suppose you can cut off the existing hangar and weld it on to your new exhaust. There will be nothing wrong with putting on a muffler as long as it's not clogged. You'll either gain or lose a few hp depening on it's design.

Thanks for the help guys, although, most people are more concerned with the fabrication, I checked the demisions out a while back, the cuting and welding isn't a problem, and the hanger will not be hard to make either, I was worried about changing the back pressure and causing my car to run lean because the muffler is a straight through design.....Putting the muffler on is just a quick fix because my stock one has holes in it....it'll only be on there for a couple of months until I get my money for the HKS carbon fiber/titanium tip. I guess I'm going to go ahead and put it on, it'll only be on a few days before my power FC and commander come in, hopefully it won't mess anything up. Thanks again for all the help.
