is Wikipedia wrong? re: 6spd trannies
 

so i was reading through the wikipedia page and something caught my attention as i had never heard this information before... and im still not sure that i believe it. however, if this is for real (which i am doubting) i want to get some more information and a part number ;) im going to og double check my spirit-r brochure. anyone w/ info please post. -heath

"There are three kinds of "Spirit R": the "Type A", "Type B", and "Type C". The "Type A", which accounts for 500 of the 1,500 "Spirit" models produced, has a 6-speed manual transmission, and is said to have the best performance of the three models. The "Type B" has a 2+2 seat configuration and sports a 5-speed manual transmission, and 500 were also made. "The Spirit C" is also a 2+2, but has a 4-speed automatic transmission and 500 were made.

It's wrong, no FD came stock with a 6-speed tranny.

The problem is that Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, so the info posted there can be fact or fiction.

There IS a 6 speed transmission, however it did not come from the factory and costs much more than what you or I may be willing to pay.

yeah the greddy... whats that, a laughable 6 grand just for the parts??? with prices like that why bother engineering it in the first place :biggrin: hahah.

Why don't we just edit wikipedia ourselves and contest the issue. This may save some trouble in the long run. After all, wrong information will lead to more stupid questions about the FD's in the future....

Another newbie will read wikipedia and think, "Sweet!! Rx-7's come with 6-speeds!" Then he or she will sign up and post in this forum, "Hey guys, i'm new so be easy on me. Why can't I find an Rx-7 with a 6-speed tranny? Thanks for your help."

Then you know our response....yada yada yada.....no 6-speed...

Yeah. Wiki is not a source of information, it's a source of entertainment(generally speaking)

and I agree with DrunkenBowler, we need to propogate the facts about our cars, and not just ignore the myths.

All FD's come with 6 speeds!

And I have a few friends that quote wikipedia on EVERYTHING, it really aggrivates me. Even after explaining how incorrect they are most of the time they still proceed to do it and present information to me as if it's a fact or something :rolleyes:. I also found it funny when the news started reporting that all across the country high school students were failing classes because they kept using wikipedia as a source and basically had false information for their entire essay :lol:, that'll teach the lazy youth!!! :tonque:.

im always fighting with people over Wiki info.Its pretty useless generally speaking.

HAHAHAH Thanks for the chuckle need it before I head home from a long day at work- Possible to switch it out for a higher forward gear....who needs reverse?? haha

Wikipedia is not as useless and misleading as you guys are saying. There certainly are articles that are incorrect, but the vast majority of the information I have found there is accurate. In order to not get fooled, you need to use it like any other encyclopedia. It gives you a starting point when learning about something you know very little about. Anything you find needs to be verified with more "reliable" sources. The benefit is you don't have to rely on Google or your buddy to find the relevant starting information.

It all depends what your'e looking for.

If the subject is one in which there are a lot of enthusiasts, or it's a more 'pop' phenomenon, the misinformation will be rampant. Sometimes because the well-meaning writers simply don't have the direct experience or time required to thoroughly research and verify each fact.

If the subject is more scientific, the writers tend to have a background that produce much more grounded content. This is the kind of info I find useful most often. The danger with these articles is when the author simplified a technical subject and the reader takes the literal meaning out of context. But that's a universal issue with any non-rigorous treatment of technical matters.

well honestly, most of the stuff in the article is accurate, and is a good starting point... but as i understand it, the theory behind wiki is that the more people that review the files (such as this one) *and correct the mistakes* then everything works rather well. whoever wrote the FD bit got most of the points right, except for a few details, and being rx7 nerds, its on US to update anything we find as wrong. basically if enough "experts" review the wiki-files all the kinks get worked out. so who wants to edit it ;)

btw..iv alwasy wondered what PEP refers to..i mean..base, r1, touring and wtf is PEP?

They stopped the Touring package in mid-94. It was replaced with the PEG package. For 95, it was renamed the PEP package and included: cruise, sunroof, leather, and fog lights (no CD player, no Bose, no rear wiper).

After you edited it someone changed it back to 6speed, then someone changed it to 7speed, then I changed it to 5speed... I have a feeling it won't stay 5speed for long...

This is why wikipedia will never be a credible source for anything that you don't already know. Anyone can edit anything to say/be whatever they want. Personally when I'm looking through archives to find information I hate having to try and guess if it is actually correct or not. I'm sure there are people out there who purposely go in and change things to be wrong just for shits-n-giggles.

wikipedia is a place for peoples opinons, even though they are rong, use it and double check stuff.
another thing; i wikipediad something on rotary engines and it came up saying that the renesis was the best rotary ever made blah blah blah. better than the 13b in the fds. didnt a whole bunch of the rx8s get recalled for advertising more horsepower than it actually had? and ive herd of a whole bunch of kinks going rong with them. something to do with hurricanes and dirt getting up into the engine. im gonna stick with the fd
