why does my power antenna stay up when listening to CD's?

Ok,

the worlds dumbest question. My 94 was bone stock when I bought it. I have since replaced the clarion fM Stereo that was in there. It never worked from the beginning so I dont know the answer to my question which is...

Why does my antenna go up when I play CD's? The only way it goes down is if I turn my head unit off. I purchased wiring harnesses for my stereo so I did not have to cut wires. I would prefer the antenna only to go up when I listen to the radio. Any ideas?

It's how you're stereo is designed; most work just like you describe. I would like it different too, but it's normal.

yeah, my pioneer 8400 does the same thing. my old stock deck only raised the antenna for tuner. almost all aftermarket decks are this way.

well thanks everyone. That just about sucks!

I posted a similar question the other day, it seems the only way to accomplish this is to install some kinda switch. I am thinking about getting a hold of another stock driving light switch, and installing that in my empty OEM button slot. This way I can put the antenna up when listening to the radio, and lower it when listening to CD's. Using the fog light switch will also keep with the OEM look.

I have an idea,
what if we hook into the rear window antenna and disconnect the remote wire that actuates the antenna, this has been bothering me as well, because i always listen to cd's and don't need the antenna up, i have been thinking of doing this but just haven't got around to it, anyone else tried this yet?

I don't particuarly have an answer here, but can you actually see your antenna while you're driving and listening to your CD's!? Does it really bother you that it's up?

I've still got the stock BOSE stereo and indeed when I switch over to CD, the antenna winds down, I know because I can hear it. But, to be honest, when I'm listening to the radio and driving down the road, I haven't been able to see the antenna yet..

So I'm not sure why it matters if it's up or down..if you're worried about the thing breaking cuz it's going up and down unnecessairly..I can understand that..

well....

Reason #1 The car looks better with the antenna down.
Reason #2 The motor will burn out quicker.
Reason #3 it annoys me.

Other than that its OK I guess :).

Cypher have you ever looked at your car from the out side with the antenna up? IMO it just looks plain stupid. Makes your FD look like a rempote control car. Any way, I am either gonna try my switch idea, or just disconnect the antenna all together since I listen to CD's like 97% of the time.

There is a wire (12v) I believe that comes off the back of your head unit, it activates the antenna. If you really wanted to you can cut it, hook up a switch and mount the switch somewhere under your dash, that way the antenna only goes up when you have the head unit on and you flip the switch.

plus the increase in drag!!!! :P:

If you are really upset about this you could always go w/ the new alpine units. The ant goes down quite nicely when playing cd's..... No one wants the drag that that damn thing produces ne wayz;)

I am unsure about all head units but both Sony's I have had have seperate trigger wires for amps, and the power antenna. Obviously the Amp wire should go to the amps, and the antenna wire should go to the antenna lead. Then the antenna should be extended only when playing the tuner.

Do you have any specific model numbers? I am at Crutchfield right now, and they only mention 2 units for the FD, the one I am currently looking at is the CDM-7874
