Why didn't the FD come with stock 3mm apex seals?

I am a first gen owner and I am not usually a part of this side of the forums(though I would take an FD over any car). I am here to ask a question for a friend. Why didn't the FD come with stock 3mm apex seals? He says Mazda was stupid not to and I cannot arque with him why they didn't because I don't know. If anyone knows please tell me.

3mm seals are not necessarily stronger. There have been many people running 2mm seals and run 25+ psi of boost with no problems. The real question is why would you run 3mm?

jsplit 04-04-05 12:37 PM

Because 2mm seals are just fine?

Many people prefer 2mm seals to 3mm seals. 3mm seem to be more likely to chatter for one reason. There are a bunch of threads debating the merits of each size if you want more info.

Thanks for the help

3mm are were put on to counter the shaving from the rotor that were worn and wouldn't hold compression with 2mm, is one better then the other not sure for ever person who has good reasons to run 3's there just as many for 2mm as long as you get good 2mms

2mm seals typically have better low-speed compression - that's one of the big advantages for an engine you're selling to the public.

I believe he's referring to milling the rotors to fix minor damage from a blown/damaged engine. Many shops recommend 3mm seals only if the rotors need to be milled to repair minor damage. They don't recommend 3mm over 2mm if the rotors are fine.

2mm seals seal better w/ less friction than 3mm seals - thus giving better efficency that translates directly into better fuel economy.
