why buy a mazda ppf?

im taking out my tranny out right now and i was looking at the ppf. Just curious Why somebody would buy the mazda ppf. What advantage does it have over the stock. I honestly can't see any bracing advantages. maybe because it's nice and shiny red?

fdeeznutz 02-08-04 07:17 PM

You mean Mazdaspeed PPF. I think it is like 30% stronger than stock

VQracer 02-08-04 07:31 PM

or is it 10%?
RE-Amemiya being 20%

rzograbian 02-08-04 07:46 PM

how much does it cost and whats wrong replacing it with a used stock one?

fdeeznutz 02-08-04 07:50 PM

Here I was wrong it is 10%

Inspect it carefully while it is out. If you see any cracks, replace it. If it is solid, keep it. Don't waste your money on a new one if you don't need one. The stock PPF is fine.

mine makes this grinding noise when i turn hard and gas it. i have an extra one so i might as well change it.

also, you dont need to buy a mazdaspeed one because its the same thing with a nice paintjob and a nice price ;)

I disagree. The Mazdaspeed PPF has proven to be stronger, not one owner has reported breaking it. Whereas the stock PPF breaks over a period of time even after replacement. The Mazdaspeed unit also comes with a nice logo. ;)

user 9348703 02-08-04 09:18 PM

Yeah its suppose to be stronger. PPFs are weird. A lot of racers over here are on stock with T51s and shite laying down quite a bit, and people stock. There isnt any application that makes it break more of less. Rollcage people break then, rollcage people dont, big power break them, big power dont.

Anyway the MS is proven to be stronger, I can look into it more if you need to. Dont buy it though like most said just to buy it, buy it only if you have a cracked one.

VQracer 02-08-04 10:19 PM

I'm waiting for RE-Amemiya U.S. to open so I can order a PPF from them.

ska*utomatic 02-08-04 10:45 PM

basically what i'm getting here is that it's not worth the money unless you need a new one, and even then maybe just easier to buy a used stock one. that's kinda what i thought from the begining

IMO, if you broke/break the stock one, that should be a good indication to get something stronger. If your stock on isn't broken, no need to upgrade it.

ska*utomatic 02-08-04 10:50 PM

oh also who cares if it's red and has a logo anyways. noone except maybe a mechanic will ever see it. hell maybe i'll just color on a nice logo with a sharpie

Allright, if anyone out there has actually purchased the Mazdaspeed PPF can you please measure the wall thickness of the metal, and get some good photos of the internal bracing? On a second note, I have my PPF out and noticed that some of the bracing is just spot welded rather than seam welded which would definatley be a weak link. And if you are concerned about you stock unit breaking, just add a diff support for a lot less money.

How do you know? Do you HAVE a MS PPF?

It's stronger. TRUST ME. I have one.

I'm almost 99% certain that the RE Amemiya PPF IS a MS PPF. Like RE diff/tranny fluid is redline MT 90.

rzograbian 02-09-04 02:01 AM

yea, i dont know wxactly but i have a hard time figuring out what 10% will get you?

10% IMHO is a lot concedering not all of them break. If we were talking about a part that breaks on all FD, I would piss on 10%, but any percent more then a PPF that broke is better then the one you had on it..

travisorus rex 02-09-04 09:09 AM

Has anyone ever tried making/fabricating a new unit? It could be made out if tubing, use heim joints and probably be at least 10% stronger than the stock unit.

felix_is_alive 02-09-04 10:27 AM

why not re-enforce the one you have ,thats what i did , hasn`t cracked since

TEDDER1 02-09-04 11:25 AM

Snapped mine clean in half and then had my friends weld 1/4" or 3/8" steel to the newer one i found. still works... :D
