Who has reinstalled a cat after running full exhaust

I love my car after owning it for 7 years but I would like like it to be less in 2 ways.

Less smelly and a little more quiet,
(every cop for 3 blocks to knows I,m there)

I would like to hear from anyone who has run a full exhaust that installed a cat and what their experiences are, thanks,Carl.

I thought about switching i have a full exhaust and i think is loud. But i rather spend the money and get my car running right first. Think it depends on the cat back too dont think the cat will make a huge difference with a cat back like a apexi n1:)

The smell, I can understand...

But you're running a Greddy SP. I'm running the RB duals on an open, and it is very quiet unless I get on it. Everyone I talk to says I have the best sounding exhaust they've ever heard. I wish I could hear it at WOT from the back; too bad noone else is allowed to drive it :(

Davin 12-03-07 07:58 PM

i did that, i ran full exhaust, bonez mp/dp and greddy ti and it was fucking loud!

Well I heard a resonated midpipe at idle and it gave me the idea....the Rx7 store sells them for $250 their hi flow cats $100 more.
Someone chime in who has fitted a high flow cat to a open exhaust and tell me what if it will hit my goals of getting rid of the smell and quieting things down a bit.

buy a metalic substrate cat and weld it in either your mp or a resonated mp. Its like 150 bux for just a core. More flow than normal cats and less smell.

BTW, metalic cats last longer and dont require an airpump

turBRO240 12-03-07 09:03 PM

Armen, what is the link to that mettalit cat thing you told me about that you can weld?

R-R-Rx7 12-03-07 09:23 PM

got knightsports full exhaust system titanium catback with metalit catalyzer..slightly louder than stock and the power it gives is amazing

ArmenMAxx 12-03-07 09:29 PM

Here is an expensive one.....http://www.suprasport.com/RT-High-Fl...t_p_54-17.html

Heres some others. Not sure if its better or worse..

I've got a Bonez midpipe for sale. Great shape, with a high-flow cat. Asking $150

i have a full turbo back and i just put the cat on when i need to pass emissions. i dont get hassled too much about the noise cause i put in a silencer and tuned it to a low tone. its nice. invest in one it still sounds dope

Troux does the catback take most of the smell out?what about sound,Isee you have a Greddy sp too.

I have a SS downpipe (I don't know which brand), a 5" SS cat (again, don't know the brand), and an HKS Superdragger catback. With the cat installed the car is noticeably quieter, the smell has been reduced to almost non existant, and I don't have boost creep issues :).

i had a bonez midpipe customized to have a magnaflow resonator and a metal core high flow cat. worked great for sound and smell!

i have since moved to a smb 3.5" one and have the custom one for sale. pm me if interested

SMB sells a mid pipe that has both a metal cat and a muffler in it. I just installed mine after running the RX7 store mid pipe with the Magnaflow muffler. The performance and noise levels are similar with less stink.

I also have a mid pipe that I had installed a metal cat onto (w/o a muffler or resonator). That definitely killed most of the stink and flowed almost identically to the straight mid pipe according to the butt dyno.

I also tried a Bonez high flow cat. Performance did suffer slightly with that setup according to the butt dyno. Spool up with a bit slower but it was quieter and smelled much less. After running an open exhaust for so long, the most similar setup for me was to run the SMB.

Did you dyno before and after with the SMB to compare it with the rx7store resonated MP?

gracer7-rx7 12-04-07 11:25 AM

Only on the butt dyno. :)
Meaning I never dyno'ed it. Going by how it felt on the street.

It feels close enough that I didn't notice a big difference on my setup. I'm running ~10 PSI on 99 twins with a streetport fwiw. I don't know your setup so I can't say that your results will be the same but I have been very satisfied with all of the above exhaust setups for different reasons.

I TOTALLY needed to read this. My wife won't RIDE in my RX7 because of the noise and especially the smell. Not having an airpump, I had read mixed reviews on adding a cat. I need to get a metallic cat and move on.

You have an Greddy SP and you want it to be more quiet?? Thats about as quiet as it gets. Just throw on a resonated midpipe and it will be really quiet.

neofreak 12-05-07 11:50 AM

I threw on a borla xr-1 and a metalic cat, it's still loud, but it doesn't stink anymore! (With a RSR Racing Beat Dual Tip)

It sure does. Cats are there to eliminate the pollutants that create the smell, and are always a noise inhibiter, as well.

BTW, the Greddy SP is for sale, too. As David said, the Greddy SP is about as quiet an exhaust as you can get. ;)
