Who has driven a single turbo set up?
 

I'm looking at an RX7 on Craigslist in San Diego. I guess the guy that owns and runs rotarytuner.com owns it.

It's got a monster engine. I'm really interested in linear power delivery with a wide powerband. Not the sort of power delivery that will spike and spin me out mid corner. I'm thinking of doing some track days for the first time.

How does a single turbo affect the power delivery?

single turbo's are a whole different car than the stock twins. do some searching and you will find out.

i looked at the link of the car you are looking at and spotted a couple things. they claim 500 rwhp...but with the gt35r, it would be very hard to acheive that unless it was with race gas. it seems as though there is not enough fuel there with only 1300 secondaries and one walbro pump. it just does not seem to come together.

another thing is that no r1's came with leather seats. he may have swapped them being the suede ones wore out, but just to give you the heads up.

try reading a bit and getting a better idea...there is a single turbo section here on the forums

and if your worried about breaking the tires loose in the corners single would be a bad choice in my opinion.

Generally a single will have a higher power band. The twins are small so they spool quickly, working together they make more drivable boost for the steet. A single will yield higher power but make power later in the rev range.

You should do lots of research before purchasing an FD. Many people have posted their money pit horror stories. There are lots of people moding FD's and making claims. There are right ways to do things. Make sure you don't get fed a bunch of crap and regret buying.

I have three auto swapped to manual Fds with T04s singles in each one. Each car weighs around 2500 lbs or less. All I can say is you will not be able to wipe the grin off your face.

Seems like a nice car but some of his selling points are weird...

He claims its an R1 but has leather.
He claims 500 RWHP yet he's only using 1300cc secondaries.
I doubt whatever warranty he claims is transferrable. My experience is that the builder only warranties it to the next owner. If its a reman, then there is no warrany after all those mods.

He's a forum member so I'm sure he'll comment further.

I've seen those pix in the post pix of your FD thread. Take it for a test drive if you're serious about buying it, or have him give you a ride so you can see what it's like. IMHO, I think a single would be a little "peakier" if you are looking for a long smooth powerband.

i have a single turbo FD and every time a get in it or look at it i get the biggest smile on my face as a mater of fact im smiling right now because im thinking about it.

I know the guy and he's legit. The previous owner redid the seats in leather and it makes 422 rwhp so almost 500 flywheel hp. Greg, chime in here when you get a chance. :)

after reading this thread, single would give more direct power, but longer on the reload than the twins, so twins better for the daily user, single for a str8 line race FD would b best.

I have no doubt he is. I'm just saying it just sounded odd the way he was describing it. He should work on the description if he doesn't want people to question things.

Thanks all. I have 3 FD's total that I'm looking at right now. This would be the second FD I've owned. I'm pretty sure this one is the nicest of the bunch.

One slightly disturbing fact I heard this evening is that it's not possible to get the smog done on a single turbo. No-one in SD will do it. Any comments? That would be a bit of a deal killer right there.

Yep, you will need to deal with having to get it illegally smogged every two years.

The GT35R is a very user-friendly single turbo, it will be very drivable at the track.... at low boost.

I know that car as well. It is nice. There are a few people in the west section that could help you with the smog:)

I had a single, singles are BY FAR better then the shitty twins....

As for cornering the single is better, you can play your lag...

As for the wait wait wait the wham 4000rpms, thats a pretty small turbo bro to be doing any spining at 4 grand. My T04E same on a 4500 approx and only just came on, it did do full boost.

The problem with the twins though unless you really got your RPMS figured out and dont watch the road is its on full bore at about 3500, so no problem to spin out in corners. (yeah I know the details guys, but I just woke up, I think that works though haha)

Negative - I am in Ohio. That was my third conversion. Can do it now with eyes closed. I retained all the pics and documentation for all three.
