who built their own cold air intake?
 

Hi all. Since I get satisfaction out of doing custom work on my cars and have access to a machine shop and cad software, Im going to build my own air intake.

I bought the stock one to replace the pettit one to give me some idea on what fits.
If anyone has pictures or ideas from one you built or installed, can you please post them or email them to me?

I would like to get my ideas together first and then work up some dimensions and a design.

Where do you all find the best place to pull air from is?
I was planning to pull from between teh frame and the radiator. since I have a vent under the license plate on teh 99 frontend, I may try capturing teh air from there too. I play with fiberglass from time to time so I figure that is the way to get air from the bumper to the airbox location.

the 4 most important things Im looking for in my design are:

1) function
2) look
3) sound deadening
4) ease of fab
5) removeability (for working on the other things )


What Im hoping for here is some pictures of some out of the car. to show how they breath and how they mount.

I'm working on one right now. It's going to be made out of carbon fiber panels. If I'm good enough I'll put Rx7 on the lid. I don't have any dimensions yet, but I'll let you know how it goes. I'm going to pull the air from the passenger side duct that would be going to my second oil cooler if I didn't have a touring.

Before M2 came out with their cold air induction unit, I had the ultimate modified stock filter box cold air induction system. It also worked with any stock replacement IC like the Greddy SMIC. Some of the instructions only apply if you still have a stock IC.

1. Through away that piece of plastic that connected the stock IC to the filter.
2. Cover up/close the resulting hole in the IC duct.
3. Remove/cut out the plastic between the top of the radiator and the cross over frame. Similar to what Mazda did for the IC duct inlet.
4. Remove the 90degree elbow inlet for the bottom of the stock filter box.
5. Enlarge the resulting hole to extend to both sides. You know have a retangular hole about 2.5" tall and as wide as the box. Make an inlet duct to fit this hole and have it extend over to the top of the radiator where you cut out the plastic. The filter now gets its air above the radiator.
6. Make a deflector about 4" high and as wide as the opening in front on the top of the radiator. I attached this to the IC inlet duct lower lip and to the verticle plastic bars in the grill inlet. This forces air up into both the IC and new air filter inlets.
7. Cut out the ACV discharge muffler out of the top of the filter box. This more than doubles the volume of space above the filter. Cover up both holes now not used in the top.
8. Dump the ACV discharge air to anyplace else now. That was the olive green top metal pipe and hose that
attached to the top, and the muffler outlet that went down to nowhere.
9. Get a drop in K&N filter.

This mod works just as well as M2's box!


If you really know your FD well, you should understand what I have described, or should be able to figure it out.
