Whistleing in turbos at high rpm's

I washed my car the other day and then took it out for a drive afterwards. I got on it in 2nd gear and at about 5500-6500 there was a whisteling coming from the turbos i assume. Thinking i may need a rebuild but could ya let me know what else it could be. Turbos have 78000 miles on them

Is your car stock? If so the stock catback makes that whistleing noise. have u ever goten on the car befor?

MazdaSpeed93 03-13-05 05:23 PM

The car is completely stock i just changed the plugs and wires about 4 weeks ago. I dont understand how it could be the catback because it just started out of no where. I have gotten on it before and it just started this weekend so i dont know.

mad_7tist 03-13-05 05:27 PM

could be the frist stage of the turbos going or it could just be a boost leak

MazdaSpeed93 03-13-05 05:34 PM

i didnt think boost leaks made a high pitch whistle, it still seems pretty fast though

Sickass7 03-13-05 05:48 PM

oh shit, sounds like your turbos might be spooling :rlaugh:

MazdaSpeed93 03-13-05 05:57 PM

OH SHIT i wish that was true. although like i said before it has never done that high pitch whistle before and they are stock turbos they dont spool that loud.

RX7WEEE 03-13-05 07:02 PM

I'm willing to bet its ur catback, what else has gone wrong since the noise has been made, and FYI a down pipe, hard intake pipes and a intake your turbos will scream.

My turbos whistled for a while then they stopped.

They might be rubbing on the compressor housing. In that case they are fucked and need a rebuild.

If it's truly a "whistle" sound, I'd suspect a boost leak. Could just be coincidental with the washing, but if you washed the engine compartment also, maybe you dislodged an intake gasket, or a boost hose.

You have a pinhole in one of the vacuum lines. Check the line that comes out of the turbo ypipe outlet. One faces up and one faces down. These are the two most common ones to develop a pin hole. Makes a nice whistle on boost doesn't it?! I've fixed this problem on several cars and almost all of them these two hoses were the culprit. One was the vacuum chamber cracked though.

Ummmmm I thought its normal to hear your turbos spooling? Did you just change your oil or something? I put on my RB duals and can hear the turbos spooli nicely. Its not really a loud whissle but you can hear it outside.

I second that. But check your vacuum and since you're stock, you're sequential right? Are you reaching full boost on your primary turbo?

I've never heard a stock catback/muffler make a whistle noise before. But running without a muffler, with an open main cat, that makes a LOUD ass whistling noise. That's what I'm at right now. I think it's all the little holes in the comb getting air blown through them hella fast lol.

My car is completely stock so no dp or catback or intake tubing or intercooloer tubing. It hasnt affected anything i dont think, it does seem a little slower when i get up to 4k rpms but it was really windy that day and that may of been why. I'll check the vaccum lines for a pinhole. I dont know the boost pattern because i dont have a boost gauge, YET!

I've had a very loud whistling noise coming out of my turbo, but not on my 7, it was in mY VW GTi. It turned out that the bolts holding the turbo were loose. It was very loud and it did not affect performance one bit.
Just my 2 cents
