Where's It At?

I've looked -- excuse me if I overlooked it but where is all the information on the famous 'won't start- just get a click' problem? I've checked the battery, I've checked the wire/cables to the starter -- I've checked all fuses I can find -- is there a (God help me!) step by step info list anywhere? Or any one know where else to look for this mystery. SOMETIMES it starts, sometimes it doesn't, there is no reason as to when it does or doesn't start. :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

sounds like your starter is failing to me...try gently tapping it (the starter) with a hammer and see if that helps it start up. If it does, replace the starter.

Also, jump the 'S' terminal of the starter with a wire connected to the positive battery terminal and see if it turns the starter over. Make sure you are out of gear, by the way! If it does, then your starter is fine, and you need to search further. There are known problems with the ignition switches on FDs, as well as clutch interlocks and a few other things that cause this problem.

You didn't say if your car is automatic or 5 speed.... so, I'll assume it's a manual. There's a safety switch connected to the clutch that can cause a problem... check this out. And, check the connector and wire with a test light. :uhh:

Get your hands on the Mazda green shop manual. It has some pretty good trouble shooting matrix charts that should help you as well. They're pretty thorough, if a little boring to go through. But, if you follow em step by step you should be able to clear your problem.

If you need a new clutch switch, I have a brand new one. Price is negociable.

But yes, it does sound like a starter issue.

i'll bet money it's an automatic. Check the starter first. Then if that's not it.... i hate to say it but do a comp test.

It's a manual -- keep 'em coming, I got a feeling this is going to be a bear! Thanks guys!

No need for more posts until you test your clutch switch and tap the starter with a hammer. Seriously.

You should download the FSM and follow the no-start troubleshooting sequence there, too:
