where to put fittings for wastegates, fuel atomization & OMP
Hey guys Im nearing completion of my single turbo build and was after some advise on where to install nipples (or get the pressure source) for a few different things.
I need to install nipples (or use a stock nipple if appropriate) for the following things; Wastegate - was thinking of either drilling & tapping either the turbo compressor cover, or the greddy eblow. Comments? Anywhere better? Fuel Injector Atomization hose - same as above. I was thinking id put a nipple right next to wherever the wastegate one ends up? I wanted to hook this up to a nipple under the UIM but have learnt that wont work and needs to be before the throttle body? OMP vacuum source - this one is confusing me. So I pretty much need to install it infront of the turbo / where the air filter connects to the front of the turbo? Just seems like a bit of a screw around. Doable, but a screw around. I would rather use a stock nipple if possible, and I would rather drill / tap the greddy elbow over the turbo compressor but ill do whatever's best. here's how shes currently looking.. :) https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...adb0261b1f.jpg cheers |
Well after much deliberation I have decided on one thing, the location of pressure nipple for the wastegates.
I drilled & tapped the compressor housing with a 1/8" (BSPT) tapered fitting. Happy with that. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...73a0d09053.jpg I was considering sticking a second nipple underneath that one for the fuel injector atomization but that seemed overkill, plus it would look a little messy because of where the hose would have to route. I will probably put that one in the greddy elbow, it just dosen't strike me as very thick... |
When you mention the OMP vacuum source, I assume you're talking about the vacuum hoses to the oil nozzles. Those only need to see filtered air and NOT vacuum. So before the turbo compressor inlet is fine.

Matt Routing it pre-turbo is looking like more hassle then its worth. Then again its not like it would need to hold pressure. thanks :icon_tup: |
For the wastegate the best thing is to tap the compressor cover for a nipple.
What injectors are you running? With any top feed injector you should be removing the stock atomizers and using something like the Full Function lower oringed inserts. You don't need any kind of hose ran to those. The oil injectors need nothing but a fresh air source. DO NOT cap them or run boost to them. I like to take the little filters off the stock solenoids, and stick the onto the oil injectors with a short piece of silicone hose. |

I put the atomiser nipple in the elbow. It was much thicker then I thought it was

You already drilled the elbow but I would have ran the atomization line to another nipple on the intake manifold. Truthfully you can get rid of it and would never notice the difference.

Stock hookup point appears to be the y-pipe.

I would have place the one on the elbow in a more parallel position to the air flow, for a better distribution/even flow and less turbulence created.

Funny thing is, I was originally going to connect the atomization hose under the UIM. I had actually installed it, even cut the hose to length, THEN after that read that it should be pre-throttle body. So i went back, drilled / tapped the eblow, and had to remove the UIM etc to run a new longer hose to the eblow, as id already cut the other one down. Now im told it dosent matter, lol. On another note, I got a little inline fuel filter to be my OMP air filter. Im going to Tee the two OMP vacuum hoses together, then run it to the inline fuel filter and mount it somewhere I can get to it. |
I can't imagine you need extra vac/pressure sources. I had to cap some when I went single. I pulled wastegate and BOV sources from the UIM away from the turbo.
For the OMP, I ran the lines tee'd to a little breather filter mounted where I can see it. Reason being if a nozzle fails, it pukes oil into your intake on the stock system. I want it to puke oil where I can see it quickly if that happens. |
I don't have loads of nipples on my manifolds as my car is a late model JDM car.
The only one I have un-used (and capped), is a single one under the UIM that I was going to use for the fuel atomization but decided against it after research. I guess im trying to do what i feel is "ideal". If the wastegate line is best on the compressor housing then that's where it will go. I did lots of research that said the atomizer should not see manifold vacuum, so I put it in the elbow. Im trying to do what is ideal, not just whats good enough. cheers |
