Wheel Situation, 1993 RX-7 FD

So I imported a 1993 Mazda Rx7 this month, planning to work on it. It has a widebody kit on it, so I was looking to get wider wheels to fit the widebody kit, because the current ones are too small and it looks off. The current wheels have a +10 offset, and when I turn left, the wheel runs against my coolant container. So with these new wheels I want to get how can I make sure they don’t rub against the coolant container, and still look right with the widebody kit. Negative offset? HELP A BROTHER OUT. HERES PICS.

That kit looks very Mustang-y! Lots of sharp lines in contrast to the round shape of the FD.
To do it right, start with the tires. Get one of the tires you need (borrow it if you can), and use one those tools that bolts to the hub and shows you what offset to get. Like the Fortune kit, you'll likely need custom offset wheels. You could also get (borrow?) some wheels that normally go with the Fortune kit and hope they work for you.

youre going to be ~ 4-5k in a set of wheels that will fit that kit. you would be better off getting the kit removed. looks like molded fiberglass. a very large and heavy and rubber mallet will fix it

8" wheel spacers :icon_tup:

I have to second the notion of getting rid of that body kit...

Not to diss the OP, but, IMO, that's a pretty ugly body kit. You'd be much better off to do what cr-rex said and get rid of it. The original FD body is a classic, beautiful thing.

Of course, if a lot of the original body is missing, you may have little choice but to do the best you can with what you have.

Good luck.

I was holding my comment about the kit aesthetics. I'm not a fan of anything that changes the lines of the FD body. The Fortune WB kit is slick, but still not something I would do to my FD. I really hate the RB kit or anything with the rivet-style.
OP: you do you! Just because we don't care for the body kit doesn't mean you have to do anything about that. Just happy to have another FD on the road, even if it's a JDM. You're going to have a hard time with wheels. You're either going to need custom offsets $$$, or crazy spacers (very much not advisable for safety reasons).

Other worries are perhaps more important than wheels. He’ll be overheating without an undertray and he’s lost all hope of crashworthiness. Looks like the frp on that left front is being held together by tape already.

Comments about the body kit aside, that looks like some junk/free wheels that someone got to make that car roll, they aren't the right fit even for a stock FD.

I'd read up on threads on fitment with other wide body kits, like Rocket Bunny and Veilside Fortune. As stated, proper wide wheels to fit that body kit will be EXPENSIVE. Tires will also be very expensive.

You're going to need to do a lot of research on wheel fit and do some measuring.

I want to get rid of it, but worried about the cost!

I know the body kit is ugly, that’s apart of why I got it for so cheap, how much would it cost to take it off and replace the front and rear panels, and front bumper with stock looking panels??

cr-rex 01-28-21 07:41 PM

ask your local body shop. thats not a question for us.

all the panels you need can be bought from shine auto

Molotovman 01-29-21 06:25 AM

If you don't have $4-6 K to spend on wheels OR bodywork to have that kit removed I suggest just flipping the car and moving on.

DaleClark 01-29-21 10:02 AM

Yep. That's going to require MAJOR body work to remove the wide body. Most wide body kits cut into the rear quarters to remove the lip around the wheel well so you can run wide tires that go outside of the boundaries of the stock body work. That's a huge job - trying to find a stock outer quarter, having the old kit carefully chiseled off, cutting out all the damaged metal and welding in new....that's thousands of dollars of body work just in the rear quarters. Then you have a full repaint on top of that.

A body kit like that is a one-way street. You're not going back. I would think like $10-15k in body work just to make it stock-ish again. For that price you can get an unmolested car.

Yeah, find some rims that make the car look good and sell it to someone who likes the kit if that look isn't for you.

Half expecting to see exhaust pipes 12 foot in the air at the arse-end, panel gaps certainly are on the crap side! Looks like a type X, so no great loss at least.

Thought there was someone who linked rear quarters as being available on here on the last year or so?

aido 01-29-21 05:57 PM

Sold

I got it off my hands for a generous 19k! Thanks for the help boys.

fendamonky 01-29-21 06:22 PM

Good call aido, hopefully it wasn't for much of a loss!

cr-rex 01-29-21 09:11 PM

No need to be rude..

cr-rex 01-29-21 11:06 PM

not my intention lol

just 19k seems kind of lot for what we see here. if thats the outside, i can only imagine what the rest of the car looks like. it could be fantastic for all i know. just considering the exterior though, even if it had a built 20b, 19k seems steep. im enamored for the owner though for getting that much out of it.

TomU 01-30-21 09:49 AM

Nothing that some more tape wouldn't fix

quichedem 01-30-21 12:53 PM

Surprised at the selling price as well. RHD, too! Good on OP!!
