Its a 1997.
I just got my car, I imported it from Japan.
and it reads this on the back next to the tail lights.
I will post some pics in the morning.the ones I have now are to large and will not fit.

RX-7's were sold under the Efini branding in Japan until 1999.

Garoad 01-09-05 10:12 PM

Efini is french for infinity i believe.

not according to altavista.com and for some reason, i gotta trust them on that one... they never let me down in high school spanish :D

It's just a name to signify a "higher standard" of Mazda. Kind of like using the name Acura for Hondas. So, for a time, it was called the Efini RX-7.

jose-rs1 01-09-05 10:35 PM

I thought it was a special model.
since what year were they labeled efini?
They told it was a 97. but japanese cars dont have the letter code in the vin so that the year can't be id that way.
but theres no boost gauge in the dash so I wonder.
I think someone told me that 93 didn't come with boost gauge in the dash.
But I dont know if its the same in Japan.it has right hand drive and I dont know if the dash will be the same as in the US.

The boost gauge replaced the oil pressure gauge on the 99-02 models.

diablone 01-09-05 10:59 PM

It isn't a special model, all Japanese-marketed FD's were sold under the Efini brand up until it was changed to Mazda for 1999. A boost gauge was never available while it was under the Efini brand, which is why you don't have one stock.

True, but infini is, (technically, it means infinite) and the first RX-7 to carry the name was the 1991 Infini IV, which Mazda used to keep the U.S. press happy until the introduction of the FD. The name was then "shortened" to êfini for the introduction of the 3rd gen. and stayed that way until 1999, when Mazda swapped the stylized rotor-shaped infinity emblem for the new corporate "flying M" logo.

Don't forget about the other special edition FC's where there exists an Infini IV there had to be 3 models prior to it ;).

That's true, so I should not have said "first RX-7 to carry the name" in reference to the Infini IV. However, it was the only one that had any relevance to the FD, and the question was how the JDM FD got the name "êfini".

According to the information I could find, here are the production numbers for the various FC-based "Infini" models...

Infini I, "Type T" - 1986 - 300 total
Infini II, "Type U" - 1988 - 300 total
Infini III, "Type V" - 1989 - 600 total
Infini IV, "Type W" - 1991 - 600 total

The name Efini, in regards to the FD rx7, ended with the type III in december 95.

Therefore, if your '97' is badged Efini, alarm bells should be ringing! On a positive note, I have seen later FDs (here in japan) whose owners have fitted the efini rotor symbol (though, I have never seen one wearing the efini nameplate),

If you post up your vin, it should be easy to resolve.

good luck.

Thanks for that JimLab I never knew the type codes of the different infini's.

What about the FC commemorative convertible that was released in 93? The one that is winning green and has the tan seats? Not the black one that was sold in 92 in countries other than the USA.

jose - good news on the vin. '4' means type IV (96-98).

did you get any other paperwork with the car? owners manual, old registration papers?
