Profec B FTW

bcool 07-11-07 09:37 PM

this belongs in single turbo or 3rd gen specific.

Juiceh 07-11-07 11:11 PM

Blitz I-Color

Does a shitload more than just boost control.

I run the PRofec B Spec II on two of my cars and don't have many complaints.

I knew a guy that was running an avcr on his turbo Saturn and had it running nicely. It was set to reduce boost in 1st and 2nd gears to attempt to grab a little more traction. He posted up his settings in case anyone else wanted to try one. I've got no personal experience with it so I'm not going to recomend it.

autospot 07-12-07 09:34 PM

ok profec b whats a good deal for a used one with everything to install?

onemeansaturn 07-13-07 07:52 AM

I'd say around $250 for a used one in good shape with everything ready for the install. They go for ~$330 new from most places.

I would say the best one is the one they tell you to buy in the FD forum! Just an idea I could be wrong.

victorFD 07-13-07 10:20 AM

Greddy profec B spec II. Cheap, nice, easy to use and... cheap!!

DMoneyRX-7 07-13-07 11:21 AM

I love my Profec B. It functions great, it is simple and easy to tune, easy to switch boost, and looks sweet. My only problem with it is you have to know at which knotch is what boost level. I think the Profec B II shows what boost level you are running at which setting. Other than that, it is easy to install and works like a charm.

hus 07-13-07 02:55 PM

<--running profec-b spec II. Controls boost pretty well so far but I did hit a cool midnight run one night and boost crept to 16psi from my limited setting of 15psi. But I also am running DP, MP and RB muffler without a ported wastegate.

My AVC-R works fine on my single.

However, you really do have to "prime" it with a reasonable solenoid duty cycle initial value. I had it set to basically zero duty cycle (to avoid an overboost when getting started with a new engine/turbo setup) and it seemed to not work at all. It just ran off the mechanical wastegate spring. However, it worked fine after entering a more realistic initial value for the solenoid duty cycle.

On twins the Profec B Spec 1 or Type S work very well and easy to adjust/tune with their nice simple dual knobs for hi/lo boost.

The Spec II seems a bit harder to tune judging from all the threads asking for help on it.

rajeevx7 07-14-07 05:49 AM

But....If you are seq. (you didn't say), and don't have any creep (you didn't mention that either) than Damon's manual BC fine tunes both your pre-spool and final boost perfectly. I used to use it before fully opened the exhaust.

A boost controller will control boost spikes but not boost creep, which is what you likely have with those mods.

I'm running a manual BC and pre-spool, cost about $8. No electronic "bling" and it's a little more trouble to set, but rock-solid 10-8-10, even on cool mornings w/ efini 'Y' and opened intake.

spiritrmazda 07-14-07 12:20 PM

Profec B is pretty good.

Stix37867 07-14-07 01:59 PM

Knightsports EBS by far. The only boost controller out there that's made specifically for the FD.

autospot 07-22-07 01:25 AM

ok bought a profec b spec 2 from books now i have to get her in

hus 07-22-07 09:38 PM

Just fyi, find you a nice long stretch of road and do some 3rd gear and 4th gear pulls to tune it to your likings. IMPORTANT! Start as low as possible and work up from there to get it dialed in on how much boost you want to run. I made the mistake of searching for the Profec-b Spec2 tuning thread and tried to use someone elses settings that had the same mods as me and I ended up hitting 16.3psi on stock turbos!! My stupid fault. I run 11.9psi on the Low setting and 14.1psi on the High setting. I did my pulls on the Interstate late late at night and just steadily increased boost until I saw the numbers I wanted. Also remember the Power FC reads boost lower than most gauges and controllers so don't rely on it to tune the boost controller. My Pettit boost gauge needle reads 14psi, my profec-b spec2 reads 14.1psi, but the Power FC reads 0.94bars or 13.8psi.

autospot 07-23-07 12:40 AM

ok its in and what a pain in the ass to tune this thing NO consistancy at all no wonder people are poping their motors i read up on this controller for a few hrs so i wasnt green when i went to tune it i see whats coming next boom!!!!!

Stix37867 07-23-07 01:38 AM

Should of went with a knightsports EBS. Set the boost and your done...no kidding. I love it!!!!!!!!

autospot 07-23-07 08:20 AM

i just might do that if i dont get this thing dialed in

DaveW 07-23-07 09:43 AM

Ball-spring MBC works perfectly!

This is what I have.

WaLieN 08-16-07 09:17 AM

I use two homemade Home Depot bleeder style adjustable valves for my wastegate and pre-control. I have a nice 13.5-11.5-13.5 pattern. Though, they are a total PITA to tune initially.

spiritrmazda 08-16-07 12:53 PM

I just bought an HKS EVC V, I'll let you know how it works once I install it to my new twin turbo set up.

PSI R2 08-16-07 06:08 PM

Blitz SBC ID FTW Works awesome with no issues. :icon_tup:

GoodfellaFD3S 08-16-07 06:20 PM

I just now saw this thread. Alberto/gracer7 gave you good advice-----the spec2 is pretty crappy as far as consistently controlling boost. the 'old' profec b or the newer type-s (same thing) are great for stock seq twins. I'm still using my ancient profec b on my 500R setup and it works fine.

I've been told many times over the years by smart people that the dual solenoid Blitz bc's are also a great choice.

THATS WHAT I'M RUNNING....BLITZ Dual Solenoid bc...
Works Great...

Copeland 08-16-07 06:55 PM

I might be selling a Profec B Spec II soon. It's in great shape and I never used it (bought it used) for around $250 if you're interested.

Reason: I just installed new pilled lines and ported my wastegate so I no longer need the BC.
