Whats the best short shifter for a FD

Im looking at picking up a short shifter for the FD but Im seeing alot of differant ones out there, does anybody know if one brand or model is better than another or are they all pretty much the same.

C's makes the best if you can fine one used. Mazdaspeed or knockoff mazdaspeed would come second.

the rest all have its hits and misses... short and notchy like B&M for example or stock feeling but barely shorter.. like the RE Amemiya

kyleaudio 04-20-10 07:41 AM

it all depends on what you want, as stated above if you want a very short shift, but dont mind it being tight and notchy then a B&M or B&M replica will be great, i have one and it is great! i have a C's in my FC and it is a very nice shifter, very smooth and easy, not so tight and notchy. i dont know how much it matters, but i have weighted shift knobs on both, greddy in the FD and razo in the FC.

Thanks for the advise guys.

Be aware that short shifters will make the shifting feel notchier. I personally prefer the stock shifter b/c the shifting is very smooth.

I have the Gotham racing Short shifter, and I LOVE it. It's discontinued though, lol.

Taylorjones 04-20-10 10:59 AM

is there a good web site or something I can get a B&M short shifter?

SWAT81 04-20-10 12:25 PM

C's Short Shifter, hands down the best

shelldawg 04-20-10 12:57 PM

I have a pettit and like it but I have not tried any other short shifter to compare to.

I love my b&m short shifter....but it grinds sooo loud...ive tried everything to get rid of the noise, but it wont go away...I think im gunna get something else..

insomniac 04-20-10 02:35 PM

As already mentioned above, C's has to be my favorite of all of them. Pair the C's shifter up with a nice heavy knob Mazdaspeed leather or even the stock knob will do very well. The added weight will aid with each throw, plus the heavier knob will give it a nice solid precise feel.

Funny, my B&M doesnt grind at all. Maybe it's your tranny ;)?

Damn another one of these threads.

I've had my share of SS's and mazdaspeed is by far the best one, and i still have it now. 3 years and counting.

Julian 04-20-10 04:39 PM

Do a search on this site. A lot has been written, seems leanings are against the B&M but are for the Mazdaspeed, RE Amemiya. My RE A is weighted like stock and styled just like except without the bend to the side; used it for about 5 years and love it. Not notchy at all.

I understand that Pettit was a MS and maybe a copy now; C's never used never seen. When you change your shifter change the bushings using either Mazda Competition alum bushing or kits like RE Amemiya come with a bronze bushing. I forget which bushing I used, probably the Mazda one as I had good experience with in on my other cars.

Ive searched the site abit for info and it seems like the C shifter gets the most vote but finding one of now is gonna be harder than finding a chick that isint nuttier than a squirrel turd, its looking like the Mazdaspeed will most likey end up being my choice.

i used to have a real B&M. i really liked it but it got sloppy after a little while.

now i have a $20 (shipped!) billet steel shifter off ebay. loving it. it's a B&M clone but its made from steel instead of aluminum. nice clicky shifts, goes into gear every time.

i checked out goodfella's RE-Amemiya shifter on his FD and truthfully i like the feel of my steel B&M clone.

here's a pic comparing it to stock:

I did notice there were quite a few for sale on Ebay, no brand names but I did wonder if anybody had one and how good they worked, they are alot cheaper thats for damn sure.

theorie 04-20-10 06:05 PM

yeah i've heard the aluminum B&M clones (like what you find on ebay) get sloppy because the aluminum is weak.

the billet steel version (like i posted above) can be found on ebay, and like i said before, so far so good :)

Blackadde/// 04-20-10 06:14 PM

I have a brand new C's for sale, but my asking price is ridiculous. :icon_tup:
They are now discontinued. =X
pm me if your seriously interested. pics in my 4-sale thread.

Sent ya a PM

indispeed 04-20-10 06:54 PM

i love my aluminum B&M shifter, wouldn't trade it for anything..........

MOBEONER 04-20-10 07:28 PM

Stock shifter for me....

TpCpLaYa 04-20-10 07:50 PM

I like a very short shifter....I hate when the shifter/knob stick up way high. I have a B&M replica off eBay and I have no complaints. The ride is rough on my car and the it's loud so having a buttery smooth shifter isn't exactly a concern of mine. The B&M has a very crisp shift (race feel) and has a centering spring to aid in shifts, especially the tricky WOT 2-3 shift. Combine with a nice heavy ball shift knob and you have perfection.

anees 04-20-10 08:28 PM

i think the factory shifter is still way better than any other short shifter

type3tom 04-20-10 08:57 PM

Thats what Im trying to cure, the 2nd to 3rd gear shift under WOT
