What are you paying for engine rebuild?

I'm in Reno Nevada and the only option here is the dealership, which is outrageously expensive. What's the cost range for you guys who've had your motors rebuilt? I'm looking to using my stock turbos, and most everything else; just need the short block rebuilt.

2007 ZX-10R 03-01-08 05:09 PM

including R&R you're looking at about $3600, and there are always many other things to do when the engine and trans is out of the car, so budget for about $5-6k, minimum

after you inspect your stock turbos you likely won't want to re-use them, either

retaliate1st 03-01-08 05:22 PM

so far i've dumped around $9500 on all kinds of goodies just because the engine's already out

mikeric 03-01-08 05:28 PM

Yeah, might as well change out your clutch and resurface your flywheel while you have the engine out of the car. A decent build with some porting and 3mm seals cost about $3000-$4000 from a reputable manufacturer, a little more if you need new housings. With no add-ons, you can get one for $2150 here:

$5500... includes R&R engine and all new internals

djseven 03-01-08 05:59 PM

RotaryResurrection.com. Lets assume you need a new rotor and new housing it will cost you around $1500.00 for the rebuild. If you want new housings and need a rotor the rebuild would probably be around $2300.00. He will replace whatever you want replaced and his reputation speaks for itself. Best deal going and has been for a long time.

If he gives me a place to stay I will fly out there and ship out any parts I will need and do the rebuild/ pull and install for $5500.00:) Ill include all new hoses, and even get the flywheel resurfaced for that price:)

GoodfellaFD3S 03-01-08 06:03 PM

If a customer sends us just the short block, we'll tear down/inspect/clean/clearance/build for $650 plus parts.

Copeland 03-01-08 06:06 PM

I got my Reman for 2300 and I'm installing it myself with just a few extra gaskets and seals to be replaced. I had just finished my new 5 speed swap with a new lightweight flywheel/clutch/starter/turbo so that will def cut down on costs.

I am still midway through my engine swap so I will post the totals up when I am done.

Mazda Factory Reman $2300 (Generally higher costs though)
Pilot Bearing/Seal $12
Throwout bearing (mine as well replace this too) $90
LIM/UIM gaskets $30
Walbro Fuel Pump upgrade $100
1600cc secondary upgrades $200 (looking to trade for 1300cc's so I can use the stock rail)
Misc o-rings (injectors, oil filter, etc)
Copper crush washers for oil lines, (might need the turbo ones if you take the lines off of them) $~50
Block off plates $40
Coolant lines (Ray has a sale on the complete kit) I just replaced most of mine replaced a few looking weak $30
OEM clamps for fuel lines
Vacuum line for vacuum job $30

You may need more or less. Just depends on when it's taken out and you can inspect some of the engine parts.

Good luck and be sure to shop around

Wow, how much do you charge for a upgraded rebuild with porting a 3"mm seals etc? Do you install?

Most of our pricing can be found here:

In case you don't have myspace, a single turbo street port bumps the price up to 1050. milling for 3mm seals is 350 plus shipping. For an engine removal and reinstallation, add 1000 to the price. We also give a 1 year warranty against assembly-related defects :)

Wow, that is crazy cheap, almost scary cheap. I might be moving to Philadelphia and then you would be decently close by. I have a good engine right now, but it is good to know my options for the inevitable. Especially since I am running 15 PSI on the high boost setting on my RX6 single.

Good to know.

^Thats why i went with IR Performance. My car is there now but as far a paying goes not sure yet i just keep sending him money:) I work part time since i am still in high school and paying off the loan that i had to take out for the car so everyone of my paychecks goes to my car and i just barley have gas money to get to work to make more money to go in my car:rlaugh: . But i am guessing in the $4000-$4500 range since i "think" my engine is in decent shape and having them pull the engine and port it. I am too lazy to pull the engine myself and plus they back up their work.

had mine rebuilt with a street port @ 3mm mazda apex seals. came out to around $1750 or so, plus shipping each way.

we did the pull, teardown, and re-install our self.

I did not know there were 3mm Mazda apex seals. I guess I learn something new everyday.

Envisioned7 03-01-08 08:46 PM

Theorie just so Im clear, you had your existing motor street ported, not bought a new one right? Cause that price is insanely low...cheapest 3mm apex seals I found were still over $1,000... :-)

IRPerformance 03-01-08 09:05 PM

We try to keep it affordable for our customers. Remember this is assuming all your housings and rotors are reusable. It does not include seals, gaskets, and bearings. Those will run about another $1000. Mazda 3mm steel apex seals are about the same price as 2mm seals. YOu must be looking at ceramics or that price includes the rotor milling.

majuljo 03-01-08 10:35 PM

just reading this gives me joy to look forward to doing a rebuild but also scares the living shit out of me.

wolf_9782 03-02-08 03:16 AM

2,800 w/ resuseable rotors/housings and a large street porting. i couldve gone half bridge and kept the price the same but i decided not to, gas prices are so shitty right now and its going to chug more as it is lol. also got 3mm apex seals with double spring set up :)

Chris, you don't warrant the use of synthetic oil in your builds? have you had any problems with it? Thanks!

Banzai-Racing 03-02-08 09:34 AM

Without turning this into the great "Synth Vs Non-Synth" debate, the answer is quite simple. We have not had any problems that we know of, however every new Mazda Reman that we have ever received has had a huge tag on it saying "Use of Synthetic oil voids warranty". Additionally, in the wake of Mazda's Renesis fiasco with the engine recalls for low compression due to the use of synthetic oils, we thought it would be better to be safe....

bajaman 03-02-08 02:04 PM

As others have said, it is always a good idea to change out all your rubber hoses, do some clean up of the engine bay, plan on replacing the wire loom material as it WILL be brittle, etc. These things can easily increase the cost of your 'rebuild' by a grand or so.
