What type of gas do you use for you FD, and Why?

I've read around, asked around and it seems like people have different preference for what type of gas they use on their fd. Some people tell me always premium, others say mid-grade. Some even say put in 95 percent mid-grade and the rest premium. I was wondering what you guys prefer, use, and for what reason you use this type of gas. All opinions welcome.

I always run Sunoco Ultra 94 in mine. I use this gas because it is a high octane fuel and burns cooler, keeping internal combustion temps down. Sometimes i mix Ultra 94 with VP C14(with 6 grams of lead) at 50/50. Although i have a stock FD, this fuel combination really wakes up the bottom end and it also provides slightly more crisp throttle response. I do not recommend you use this fuel combination often as it will burn out your O2 sensor rather quickly. For normal everyday street driving, i think Sunoco or Mobil 93 octane is fine.

Conoco 93 octane super-unleaded is the best we can get around here. And.....Conoco does not use oil imported from Iraq.

ttb 03-16-03 11:50 AM

in california you can only get 91, so that's what I use, mainly chevron. Once in a while when I'm near capital expressway I'll stop by 76 and get some 100 octane just the fun of it.

Jedon 03-16-03 11:51 AM

Here in CA I can usually only get 91 octane :(
I would love to convert to propane if I had the time and money, 114 octane and cheaper, woohoo!

xstacy7 03-16-03 11:57 AM

93 here in Tennessee...

Shinobi-X 03-16-03 12:04 PM

93+ octane here in MD.

RX7Elmo 03-16-03 12:04 PM

Use the highest octane possible. This would mean "premium" at the pumps. The reason why is because that is what the manufactuer recommended. And if you even remotely care about denotation, you would use the higher octane. Pre-ignition ain't fun. And our cars run on the edge as is.

Killuminatic 03-16-03 12:24 PM

thx guys, i gues i'll just stick with premium then

Killuminatic 03-16-03 12:25 PM

eventhough i'm broke :(

boostedrotor 03-16-03 01:24 PM

93 octane plus octane booster and marvel mystery oil

scratchjunkie 03-16-03 02:35 PM

91 chevron. hi-octane in cali is rare. just stick to 76 or chevron and you should be okay.

T88NosRx7 03-16-03 02:41 PM

93 in washington.

I 8 A CIVIC 03-16-03 02:51 PM

93 here in nc..........but at race time i get gas from the airport with 120 octane

DK 03-16-03 03:43 PM

93 Shell/Texaco because I have a Shell credit card. ;)

HeX 03-16-03 03:52 PM

76, Shell, Chevron. In order of preference.

TTurboXfd3s 03-16-03 04:35 PM

always 91 octane from shells! with maybe octane booster if i feel it's needed

mb7 03-16-03 04:41 PM

I allways run Amoco Ultimate 93 octane. I've tried other gas station around here without good luck. Amoco allways runs great. I even talked to a guy here that that is one of the managers of a fuel supply company and he said the Amoco was the best ( BTW he doesn't sell Amoco fuel ) as they go through some extra refining processes. I have also found out the Amoco 93 has less sulfer than average gasoline, more butane, to provide better cold starting, and a higher concentration of detergents to help keep carbon deposits off your engine. If you need higher octane just add toulene to this stuff :)

chaste94 03-16-03 05:02 PM

I like to use Amoco as well. BP is now owned by Amoco. It is the exact same gas and is usually cheaper. Here in Charleston the pumps at the BP stations even say Amoco on them.

JhnRx7 03-16-03 06:52 PM

93 octane here in florida...occasionally i can find a place that has 94.

FCNAred 03-16-03 07:17 PM

does premixing 2cycle oil at 1oz/1gallon affect the octane rating at all?

crazysuprakid 03-16-03 09:46 PM

Texaco/Shell or Exxon 93 with MMO

hellokitty812 03-16-03 10:16 PM

just want to ask if any of u have the same problem.

when i put in Chv. gas and i got some gas smell. but if

i put 76 i don't get that smell at all.

i was told this cause by the stuff inside the gas that

they say it will clean the injeters.

do u all think so ? or is that another problem .

one of my friend have the same problem too.

please email me if u know what is wrong .

strawberry9388@hotmail.com

thank you very much .

Killuminatic 03-16-03 10:39 PM

i heard that chevron's gas is the best, cuz of techron or something in it. You guys think i should fill my FD up with MEDIUM, or SUPER?

ttb 03-17-03 12:40 AM

haven't you been reading??? the manual states minimum 91 octane. get 91.

PVerdieck 03-17-03 12:50 AM

Some poeple don't bother reading. They are known as newbies.

1 oz premix/gallon is a high ratio that isn't needed except for racing. Pettit recommends 4 oz/tank. I usually put in about 6oz/tank.

ilike2eatricers 03-17-03 01:10 AM

Wsup all. Just a simple question about something I heard and wanted some clarification. Is using the best gas (race fuel) all the time cause any retardation in the engine timing? Thanks for clearing this up in advance, just wanted to separate fact from fiction.

Not on the 3rd-gen RX-7. Timing is set by the ECU, it does not compensate successfully for the type of fuel you put in the car.

On some newer (OBD-II) cars I have heard reports that the ECU will "learn" based on the feedback of the knock/O2 sensors and retard timing if you put in low octane fuel, but in this case, it would be a timing advance, not a timing retard if you go to the "best gas".

edit: clarified how sh*tty the stock ECU is while dealing with knock.

adam c 03-17-03 12:06 PM

Chevron or Unocal ONLY!!
Premium only.

Shell is garbage!!

redrotaryrock8 03-17-03 12:20 PM

Does anybody know of any gas station in the bay area that offers higher than 91 octane? thanks

DamonB 03-17-03 03:28 PM

Any 93 octane from a name brand, high volume station. 8oz of synthetic 2 stroke oil added on race weekends.

jumprdude 03-17-03 05:06 PM

76 gas station on the corner of Almaden Expressway and Foxworthy in San Jose has 100 unleaded. Last time I was there (a week ago) it was $4.69/gal I think.

BLKTOPTRVL 03-17-03 08:31 PM

Any brand (except Texaco) over 91 O. I'm very surprised to learn that some folks use mid-grade 89.

ilike2eatricers 03-17-03 08:53 PM

thanks jumprdude. what do you think of the heightened performance if any compared to 91 octane. What do you think of the cost/benefit value for 100 octane. Thanks again.

Richierich 03-17-03 09:22 PM

94 here in canada (cheveron or Petro Canada) with 4 OZ of 2 stroke oil every second fillup.

I have 20 gallon drum of 116 race fuel. I throw a few gallons in when I go autoxing or trackdays.

Never use shell.

Pumped 03-17-03 09:37 PM

Using 94 cheveron., but now an extra 3cents got added on to our gas tax and with the current situation in the gulf the gas is freakin unreal.. so I've been pumpin 92 for the last bit:(

n2trbl 03-18-03 02:53 AM

ttb: where is this 100 octane gas you speak of? I live in so. Cali and I prefere Mobil 91 octane. Best I can buy around where I'm at.

On an FD there is no performance increase unless you tune for that increase. Higher octane allows you to run a higher A/F ratio - hence more boost. It also allows you to advance timing more. So, just dropping 100 octane into the tank on an FD does nothing, except give you more of a safety margin.

I would not recommend running 100 octane on the street unless you are worried about your car being out-of-tune enough to need the extra safety margin. Also it is not ultimately useful unless you have an ECU that allows you to swap maps quickly so you can alternate between running maps that are safe with pump gas, and maps that have been optimized for race gas. Or you could run race gas all the time but that gets expensive very quickly.

rotary-tt 03-18-03 11:15 AM

Buy 93 octane on whatever day it is on sale here at Texaco, Shell, or Exxon. Usually Tues, Wed, or Thurs it is 7-9c/gal off. Then get a Shell or Chase Freedom credit card which gives you 3-5% off of your gas purchases...

Jedon 03-18-03 11:31 AM

The 100 octane number you see for Japan and other countries is not measured the same way we measure it. They use RON which is the lab measure, we use RON+Measured at the pump/2 to get an average of lab and real world octane.

Search in a few months for the names of the people using 89 octane, those will be the ones posting: "I think a blew my motor, WTF?"

Manual states 91 for a stock car, if your running a modified car, get the highest octane possible. Specific brand is probably less important, but stay with the majors.
