What temps until fans turn on?
 

Ok, ive asked around and did the search, but i keep coming up with different numbers. I dont have a gauge either.

so at what temperature will the fans turn on?

I used to run my fans all the time, but ever since i got my radiator in, i decided to give my fans a break. i noticed that after driving for a while and then parking/sitting at a light, the fans will turn on. is this normal even with the upgraded radiator?

I think the fans come on at 221 degrees with the stock configuration.

The upgraded radiator will work better when you are moving, but won't make a huge difference when you are stopped. The car will heat up when no air is moving thru the radiator.

yeah duud, without the fans on or your car moving. The temps won't be much different that the stock radiator.

Once your kick your fans on the temps will drop ridiculously low.

When i turn my fans on my temps go below 86C. THe clolest i could get my car with a stock radiator even with stock ic was 89C.

Yes, the fans come on sitting at a light. No air flow with turbos and generally hot running engine = need to turn the fans on SOMEtime :)

With no "electical load" (defined as parking or parking/head lights on, OR heat fan above setting of 2, OR rear window defrost on), the fans are designed to turn on at 221F, as read by the water thermosensor in the thermostat housing, NOT the sensor on the drivers side of the block, and NOT with anything the gauge has to say. Above 221F, with no electrical load, the fans will come on low. At 226F, with no electrical load, the fans will kick to medium. At 221F with no electrical load BUT with the A/C on (button in, blower on, dial set to cool), the fans come on medium. At 226F, no electrical load, A/C on, the fans come on high.

WITH electrical load, the fans come on low at 210F with the A/C off, medium with A/C on. At 226F, with electrical load, no A/C, the fans come on medium, and high with A/C on under this last condition.

Thre was a factory recal/upgrade that senses the time the fans are on with the temp over 228F. If that period is 2 minutes or linger before shutoff of the car, the fans will remain on (low, I think) for ten minutes after shutoff.

But then again, the later cars may or may not have had the electrical sensor, and the behavior is slightly different. Generally, running around with the parking lights on will cause the fans to kick on sooner, which keeps the temps lower, which is a good thing!

this bring up a question i was having today. maybe you know the answer. :)

today i was doing a haltech install and came across a car that aparently did not have the recall/upgrade done. if you are familiar with the wiring, this would be found in the blue connection (i believe its z-05 if memory serves).
every other haltech i have done in an FD has had that *jumper* inbetween the engine harness and the front harness at that connection. this car was missing it.
here is where my confusion comes in...
i have alredy taken the engine harness completely out of the car, stripped it down, and realize the blue connection is missing. the reason it is missing is because i had to cut it from the harness inorder to pull it through to the bay due to some crazy melting that was going on and the conection is Fukd... BUT i figured at the time, without realizing it, oh well... i will just splice from the *other* blue one.
now i am looking at the yellow ecu connections and realize that they have the conections (for the black box behind the ecu) wired into them...
so after all this long winded explination, exactly HOW is the recall/upgrade done? i cant see how they do it without replacing the engine harness because i have never seen signs of the recall being spliced in... unless i just never really took note of it. :rolleyes:

I had my power FC turn mine on at 90C. works great. Also if you get a power FC, the A/C will not work on the #3 setting, but it will turn the fan on high, so I do that also when the car is under stress.

220 is 100C! Mine turn on at 85C.

The Miata fan mod is nice.

Low speed fans turn on at 221F to 226F, med fan at 226F High fan speed only comes on with A/C.But install temp guage sender at thermostat housing and you will see 230F untill low speed fans kick in.I think this is a major failer point on these cars, and a Mazda misprint in there manuals. Probably over time that sweltering heat helps degrade all underhood rubber and maybe contributes to o-ring failers.

Actually, 220F is 104C.

85C = 185F, your low speed fans must be on almost continuously in low speed driving. I personally don't see the need for that low of a setting for most situations, but I know a lot of people have that approximate setting.

yeah fans are on most of the time. i usually see around 89C on the PFC.

If you don't mind the cold air or you AC is taking out just turn the air and hit the AC button and your fans will stay on all the time. Cheap fan mod. Mine stay on 24/7

running youre fans on all the time will wear them out, and when they fail good chance of a overheat.

'fraid I don't know how the original wiring went, just the extra harness they put in with the fan recall. Someone might contact Mazda dealership they are friendly with to see what the recall procedure is. Then we'd know what actually did!

Is that little black box next to the ECU part of the fan recall?

yes, it is the mini-ECU that is part of the updated fan set up.

I betcha the big silver box refers to it as the mini-me when conversing with the fuel pump.

thanks. i couldnt wait for a reply, so i figured it out. just bypassed all of that mess. the haltech's pwm doesnt need it anyway. so instead of confusing myself any further it found its way to the trashcan. :)

My fans turn on at 94C when I have the running lights on.
I like the turn on the fan switch when the temps reach around 88-90C.
My temps when up to 98C while driving the other day. Scared shit outta me. I flipped on the switch and temps dropped like a rock.
