there are a hundred things you need to watch out for, since you won't be able to drive it before you buy, that will cause a big problem, but, you should ask to see if the motor has been rebuilt and how many miles it has on it, if it around 50k dont get it because you will probably need a rebuild soon, also check and see if the after market parts were installed professionally and if the power FC was tuned properly, ask if the brakes are good, ask them for a video of a cold start up, if it smokes a lot don't buy, also ask them for a video of it running when warm and a video of it being revved at 3.5k-3.8k revs for like 30 seconds and see if it starts smoking badly, i doubt they will actually do all of this so if they don't i don't know what to tell you, these cars really shouldn't be bought over the internet without taking a real life look into the car's condition

From the FAQ thread:
http://rx7.voodoobox.net/infofaq/bguide3g/bguide3g.html While it is catered towards the USA based FD3S, most of it is still relevant to non-USA based FD3S's. Here's the FAQ thread: https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/faq-3rd-gen-other-useful-links-68640/ |
If you can stick a boost gauge on it to monitor boost during the dyno run and do a compression test afterward, you'll be well ahead of what most buyers can do. (The dyno run being your extra asset). Follow the info in Mahjik's links and you'll do fine.

There are a million things to check as Mahjik pointed you to them and dgeesaman's compression test idea is probably the only way to check engine life from your standpoint.
Primarily I would check:
Like everyone said there is a large list to check but that would get you on your way. |
Be sure to check wallet thickness, its better if you take measurements in whole inchs than cm.

and look into a new bumper and lights.. thats just ugly
|
At least it has some nice ARC parts in there.

Paint and Engine condition are the two most important things when buying a fd in my opinion. If you have a little bit of mechanical ability and a desire to learn then everything else on the car is relatively cheap to replace or fix.

ask when the timing belt was last done..
