What Model is my 96 FD?

Hoping some of you guys (possibly UK/Japan ) could help me. I've been trying to figure out what MODEL one of my cars is. Haven't found many details determining differences in the series 7 cars. I've found many forums and lists regarding 92-95 that detail how many of each and how to tell the difference etc. and this also goes for 99-02. But not much on 96-98 cars. Also if it was an american VIN i could just run it. but its not.

Here's the details.

1996, CYM, Manual, rear seats, (RHD obviously), speedo is in KM, regular spoiler, (R1 type) red strut bar in the front. Stock Efini Badges. rear wiper, R1 Lip, black suede seats.

Was told it was A type R, but wasn't sure:scratch:. and if so, what kind of type r, just regular or some crazy thing after it like RZ,, SP etc.

Pretty much stock, 25,000Km on odometer.

Any help is appreciated thanks.

I dont think the RZ's came with rear seats as they were supposed to be the spartans of the lineup.

do you have dual oilcoolers?

96fd3s 03-11-14 03:57 PM

sounds like my type RS, not sure about the yellow though;

FD Models

what does the sticker inside the drivers door say?

Tem120 03-11-14 04:13 PM

I think the only yellow one was the Bathurst yellow??

96fd3s 03-11-14 05:06 PM

That's what i thought as well, which would make it an RB Bathhurst if that is indeed the case :)
unsure if they have rear seats though

Tem120 03-11-14 06:57 PM

please give us the color code , the back seats may be an owner installed option LOL

I can help. Post the JDM VIN and I'll decode it for you.

Gomez 03-12-14 09:12 AM

A pic of the VIN decal on the drivers door frame will assist too.

I can tell you it's not an SP (Australian build only) and it's not an RZ (two seater, in black only in 1996). Suede seats point to it being a Type R, but it could be something else.

Thanks for the help guys.

Yes, it has dual oil coolers. I'll get the VIN and door sticker tonight..

Just fyi, it is very common in rhd counties that they switch the vin numbers with other cars for any reasons. Even the firewall vin can be changed. But if the sticker on drivers side step is there, most likely thats the real one (unless it looks like its pealing off) .

Anyhow, to check which series you have. Your jdm vin number should be*FD3S-######
The first number after fd3s- would be your series number.

Hope it helps a lil.

Thats pretty weird, I would guess its not even a 1996 going off the above vin?
my vin is FD3S-401xxx, and is a 96.
I believe the number should start with a 4 if its a 1996.
Sorry to say, but that to me is a 1992 or 1993 car

EDIT; also is that the same number that's stamped into the firewall? that VIN plate looks like its been removed at some point as its attached with screws not rivets.

EDIT again; its a 1992 according to this.

I'm going to check the fire wall when i got home.. Sent a woman to do a mans job.. she couldnt' find it haha..

RotaryOtakU 03-12-14 04:17 PM

I thought it's common on rhd cars that the vin plate is attached with screws. It's the same on my car.

But you're right with the number. I also have a 96 model and the number starts with 4. But shouldn't the number on the plate correspond with the number stamped into the firewall right next to it?
It's also suspicious that it has the regular r1 spoiler. In 96 they changed the design. Pretty ugly in my opinion...

What's the backlight on your clocks?? If it's green it's a later model!

I also believe it's a early model, might be a 92.

woops yeah your right about that! I just checked my car and it does indeed have screws holding vin plate on

and yeah vin number on firewall should match

Sgtblue 03-12-14 06:16 PM

This doesn't sound like it's going to end well. Do you have a MS title on this yet?

K-Tune 03-12-14 06:25 PM

Wouldn't it have a whale tale spoiler in 96?

The screws on the plate are original, that's how it was done in the factory. The VIN will also be stamped in the centre of the firewall behind and above the engine.

This FD is a June 1992 Type R. I don't know who told you it was a '96 model, but they were pulling your leg. This Type R was the sportiest FD of it's day (the first RZ came out later that year). They had dual oil coolers, suede seats, front and rear strut bars, upspec tyres, hard dampers, and front and rear spoilers.

Also available at that time was the Type X (luxo pack, "touring" in the US) and the Type S (pov pack).

Now I'm starting to doubt that the 25k on the clock are true....

PUNK AZZ OVERB 03-12-14 08:10 PM

got home and yep it's stamped into the firewall also...

i do have a Mississippi title, " 1996" lol

as far as the mileage, that's what's on the speedo and the interior is immaculate and the car rides like a new car and the hatch doesn't even squeak...

96fd3s 03-12-14 08:26 PM

Ah well at least the numbers match!
Mileage may well be accurate, who knows.

Im also interested to know the colour of your gauge back lights now. If they are green then your cluster has been swapped out with a later model one, and no doubt the mileage counter along with it.

If they are orange, then it may well be legit mileage. Still not a 96 though :)

It's quite unlikely that the mileage is original.

My 2001 RZ had 15,000km on the clock when I bought it in 2008, and that's very low for a car of it's age. The OP's car is nine years older than mine......

PUNK AZZ OVERB 03-12-14 09:07 PM

I shoulda never asked.. haha
