What happens to a FD that sits for a looong time?
 

Hi all,

I've got a 93 touring that I had just about perfect (all work from KD). I also had a harley and got into a pretty bad accident that laid me up for a year and took me another year to walk again. Needless to say, my baby sat in the driveway while I recuperated.

Well, almost three years later, I can walk, bend my legs etc., so I'm finally able to get my car back ion the road. Of course, it doesn't start, so my question is what generally happens when a perfectly working car sits for a time period like I just described? Is there somethings to do before committing it to a flatbed (excluding battery of course, I knew that one)...

Flush the coolant and change the oil. Drain the gas tank and put in some fresh 93 octane. It's too bad it couldn't have been started up and driven by a friend once in a while.

nice name...given circumstance, still have a sense of humor.

just hope a mouse didn't find its way under the hood and make a home in the rats nest and chew thru some wires.

What kind of "no start"; is the starter turning the engine over?

just to add to the above knowledge, i would take out the leading plugs and squirt in some 2 stroke oil.

how exactly does everyone "squirt" atf or 2 stroke into such a small area

^^ 2 stroke oil + oil squirt can from autozone.

^ uh....squirt can? Available in many sizes.

I usually stand back about 5 feet off the drivers side with the hood open, and arc it in.

Or you can just remove the EGI fuse and crank the motor. You won't have spark so it won't start, but will lube up all the internals.

Good advice, to which I'd add a flush and refill of the brake fluid. Brake fluid loves to absorb moisture and that can corrode the calipers causing the pistons to stick.

I would think you'd be able to use something like a hand pump siphon to get most all the gas out of the gas tank. Refilling it with fresh gas should dillute whatever remains enough to make it good. Changing the fuel filter would also be a good idea.

When I purchased my FD, it came with a spare NEW engine that sat dry for about two years.

We squirted in ATF at the spark-plugs openings and the intake manifold, and let that sit overnight. Then we spun the crank to the next compression cycle and added more ATF, and waited another 12-hrs. We spun the crank to the next compression cycle, added more ATF, and again waited 12-hrs.

ATF is a very good solvent, esp. when allowed to sit & penetrate. It was a definite smoke machine for about 5-10 minutes at startup, but it freed everything up and lubed it well.
