what does everyone think when some one says....
 

hey everyone
I'm looking at this 94 r2 and the ad says that the motor needs work. the asking price is around 9k, is this to high? i figure any work means non-working and a 2500-3k rebuild and light port. what does the group say? also I met an amsoil dealer to day that says rotorys do exelent with amsoil, they supposedly sponcered racing beat a few years back. I know that rotory's tend to hate synthetics and that it'll lead to engine trouble. anyone ever used amsoil??? thanks i hope to buy an fd within a month. :bigthumb:

I only use Mobile 1 Synthetic. Don't believe the hype. Someone correct me if I'm wrong....but I heard a story that Mazda had a synthetic sponsor for one of their rotary race cars and had a falling out and ever since has always not recommended any sort of synthetic oil in their engines.

For that price, you might as well buy a running car for about the same price as the car would cost w/ a rebuild.

I have been using Amsoil oil in my rx7s from 1981 untill now with no problems .The 1994 I am running now uses Amsoil 2 cycle oil injected by the oil metering pump . I learned about Amsoil from the Rotory Rocket magazine . My first 1981 rx7 had 150 k after 12 years before I sold it for a good price at the time . I use synthetic oils in everything, have been for many years .

If the car is in excellent condition, other then the motor, thats not a bad price at all. Chances are, if the motor needs any work at all, it is shot and in need of a rebuild. You can expect to pay between 3-5k depending on what went wrong and if parts are rebuildable.

synthetic oil does NOT kill your engine, however - chemicals IN MOST synthetic oils DO!


The problem is with a certain type of low grade synthic oil - since a law suit was won ten years ago allowing manufacturers to call non-synthetic oils "synthetic" on the basis that they manually modified the mixture with synthetic chemicals. The chemical used to bond the synthetic and non synthetic parts was often a type of low grade esther which actually makes rubber seals expand, causing big problems in the RX7. These type of oils are called
"hydrocracked" oils.

TRULY synthetic oils pose no problem to a rotary, the problem is that they do not actually state on the bottle if it is truly synthetic or not.

Back on topic....

Motor needs work to me means the motor will need a rebuild like fastcarfreak says. Or it could be the owner knows absolutely nothing and has some vac issues. Hard to say w/o getting clarification from the owner. You need to raise your estimates on the motor costs unless you can do it yourself.

Doesn't seem like too bad of a price but it depends on the condition of the rest of the car.

As far as Amsoil "dealers", Amsoil uses the tried and true direct sales channels - meaning they find "dealers" aka sales people to sell their products. My opinion of Amsoil dealers as they are very motivated to sell their products and put cash in their pockets. Not to say that their products aren't good, but I know that their tranny oils used to eat seals and that cost me a tranny and clutch in VW some years ago.
