What do you think of this housing?
I am rebuilding my motor and I thought everything looked good until I cleaned it up better. I know the specs are to replace if more than 2mm in depth, this is 1.3mm at the worst which is the one just above the port. What issues will I run into if I reuse this housing?

Curious too and what caused it. Doesn't seem like a good housing to use if you can help it.

I don't have any other options at the moment and do not have the funds to buy new housings. The other one looks really good. Given that this chip from chrome is acceptable by the FSM, what ill effects might I run into reusing this housing?

That flaking will not cause any issue. Its in the best possible place on the housing it could be. Housing looks like a higher mileage housing that has had stock seals on it.
You should be more concerned with the area right above where the intake port lines up down to below the leading spark plug hole. Housing isnt great, if you are using "unbreakable" seals I wouldnt expect great compression. Could give you a better guess of compression if I could see the area I mentioned above. |
In my opinion I wouldn't use those except a budget build, which I don't do in my shop. At the very least I would get them resurfaced. It won't put back the chrome but at least it will be more even. I do it for $150 per housing.

Look at it this way.... if it affects your intake stroke be leery, if it affects your compression stroke replace if it affects your exhaust stroke call it good.
"The condition of your housings depends on how deep your pockets are, deep pockets+ new housings" -Some dude- Your housing seems to be in the middle of both intake and exhaust... if you're one a budget you're okay to use it. I would personally only use it for a race engine like a drag car. |
Resurface it and you will see 115-120psi compression if the engine is built correctly.

It looks like that is what I will be doing initially. As I am able I will probably invest in some new housings. Sooner or later I will want them.
