What to do with my car?

I've come to the realization in the last week, well I've known it for a long time but didn't want to admit it to myself, that it's going to be years before I have any spare time to put my car back together. It's already sat for about 6 years with almost no driving, maybe 100 miles every couple years. I'm really starting to miss driving the car

I suppose only the old timers know who I am now, but the car has a lot of history from the 90's and a lot of money into it in one-of-a-kind high end parts and lots of other stuff. I'd assume over $40k in parts but requires time to finish it off and once done should be painted since it's factory paint.

I'm thinking of trying to trade it for a similar black R1 in good condition with mild or no mods. What would you do?

+1

Trading it for another car is just trading for a possible headache.

i hunted Kevin down after reading in Turbo Magazine about some guy from Minn driving out to California and blowing off all sorts of hot cars...

of course i invited myself over and spent a number of hours taking in Kevin's very creative engineering. Kevin's car was the spark that ignited my project.

i pirated Kevin's general idea of two totally discrete turbos.

i think his ASP large intercooler is still best in class.

you should see his cold air system.... best i have seen on an FD. i hesitate to get into details on the car as there's too much to cover.

Kevin was a bit over the edge a number of years ago, out nights hunting drag races w super bikes, running racegas and drag slicks on the street. all and all a VERY badass black FD.

while you may make a trade on your car kevin, i am here to tell you that eventually after med school etc you will be back.

real car guys never lose the disease.

i nominate Kevin's car to the FD Historical Hall of Fame. i hope it finds a suitable home.

good luck,

howard

This is a great idea...

And we all remember you, I guess us oldies...LOL...

In an ideal world I'd buy another relatively stock R1 to putt around in, minor mods, high 11 second car stuff and leave my big one on ice for another 5 years until I have time. The reality is I was amazed to find good condition cars still going for 18k. My wife would kill me if I picked up another one for that. 10k I could argue, maybe, but after the 954rr she thinks two toys is enough.

If I do a trade I won't being starting over. I don't have time, which is why I don't just finish mine. I'd only take something that requires essentially no effort to have out on the street now. I'm an impatient child and want to drive a 3rd gen again NOW! : )

It's great to see all the old faces. I'm amazed to see a lot of you guys still around the forum, some from before the forum and the old big list.

Well, I haven't been around long but feel your pain with wanting to drive NOW! I got ripped off a little bit by a sleaze ball while purchasing my car while still in Iraq. If you want to get back to driving and can handle the sacrifice of giving up your car for one that's in the condition you want, hell go for it. BUT, if at all possible and within budget, send it NJ and have someone with the time and ability do the work for you. Either way I hope things work out for you.

I was just wondering what had happened to you as I just picked up some of your intercooler stuff from GooRoo a couple of weeks ago. Hope you keep the car or find her a good home.

I think you'd miss your car if you traded it. With passion and history comes the sentimentality that no other car... even another FD... would blunt.

mdpalmer 07-10-09 12:13 AM

I wouldn't trade your old car. You'll miss it for sure. If time to work on it is really an issue, I would send it to someone you trust to finish it up. I don't think you mentioned why your car is "down" in the first place... dead motor, clutch, turbos....? What's the big hold up already

:)

Good luck with whatever you do. I can't imagine what I would do if my car was out of commission for more than a few months, it's just too much fun!
