What is the deal with ATF fluid and flooded engines? Why not use engine oil?
 
It seems like everyone uses auto transmission fluid as a sure fire way to start a flooded engine after going through the de-flooding process.

Why not use engine oil instead? I understand the compression/lubrication story but I am just confused as to why people use ATF instead of normal engine oil?

This may be a very ignorant question but I am curious as I have heard bad things about ATF i.e. the catalytic converter deal etc.

I think you answered your own question man...The only thing I've ever heard about it is that ATF has different lubrication properties on it than the normal engine oil...

I'm pretty sure its because ATF is flammable... therefore combustable in the engine

I think people are moving away from using ATF because many people think it's less-than-ideal for the seals. This is discussed among 2nd gen owners all the time (see the 2nd gen forum).

honestly I just like to pour ATF into lawnmowers to make them smoke like a motherfucker

I think the principle is ATF breaks down carbon, and excess carbon is usually what sticks seals and springs in place, keeping them from floating and holding compression.

The ATF trick was used back in the day on first gen RX-7's that sat a long time. ATF down the carb, crank the motor, let it sit and soften the carbon, then go for it.

Really, oil is a better choice if you're just de-flooding a motor. It's much thicker than ATF, and thick is good when you're building compression up.

i have soaked a +100k mile carboned piston in atf for a whole day and it did nothing to the carbon. oil is what seals the chamber to begin with so why not use it

I just deflooded my car yesterday, didnt have any ATF so i just used regular motor oil. Worked like a charm. I just think ATF has been used more often as is just more recommended.

The flash point of ATF is a little lower than standard oil. When deflooding the car, you don't want to make it harder to start so you try to use something with similar qualities as oil, but a lower flash point so it will burn easier.
