what can this be ? tranny ?

if it is which part ?...

whenever I try to shift to 1st and reverse, my car makes this grinding noise under the low RPM. I can put it in the gear smooth and works like charm throughout all the other gears. Can anyone tell me what you think is the problem and how much will cost me to fix it ?

Thanks

Are you rolling or are you stopped when the noise happens?

TJI 05-16-04 11:55 AM

when I'm about to move..it makes the grinding noise..LIKE in LOWW RPM. But once I start moving, everything is smooth

just 1st and reverse Hmmm

Well my wintercar does this also, but then its a Saab 900 from 86 so its know to have problem with the gearbox. Hmm yea 5th is on the verge of giving up on the Saab also(again standard problem on Saab from 86)

I wouldnt worry to much about it, unless the sound goes up in volume. But i would change the oil in the tranny just incase. I put Motul GEAR 300 75W90 in my car and i could accualy feel the diffrance in smoothness when changing gear. Never ever thought a gear oil could make that much of a diffrance

might have messed up the syncro

TJI 05-16-04 01:16 PM

Syncro ?? is it possible to have just ruined the 1st/Reverse syncro only ?? has this ever happened to anyone ? I mean my gear dosen;t pop ou tor anything. LIke I said, it only grinds while I try to put it in gear, but once it's in, it rides smooth

MrDizzy 05-16-04 01:27 PM

well i know i have a bad syncro ring from 1st-2nd on my FD as its hard as h* to put in the second gear. i just rev to 4300 or more and put in third instead.
So yes its possible to just have one/two bad syncro rings.

But as i said before i put the Motul gear oil in and it got better. Give it a try, its cheaper then renovating.

Synchros are like mini-clutches. They serve to match the speed of the spinning gears (synchronize) to the speed of the spinning drive shaft (note: this is highly over-simplified). When the synchros wear-out, and they all do eventually, they no longer synchronize the speed and you get grinding during shifts. Each gear has a synchro so as the individual synchros for a given gear wear-out those gear shifts will grind.

1st and reverse are the same gear.. just other gears come into play to "reverse it"

sorry. 100% sure its a bad snychro

Just rev match when you shift and you'll be fine :p:
