What autocross helmet to buy

Guys,
What helmets are you using for autocross and where can I order one.

I have a full face moto helmet that I've been using, but it's so thick it forces me into a rather akward position in order to get clearance...which screws up my driving.

I'm 5'11" so I need something relatively thin-walled, and preferably open faced...any suggestions?

BTW, I still have stock seats...I plan on getting Torinos or Milanos to shorten my ride height...but in the mean time....$ issues, you know.

I'd swing down to your local motorcycle shop and check them out first-hand. A large in one brand isn't necessarily a large in another brand... it's always best to try them on in my opinion...

Can't help you with *which* helmet to buy, I just bought my first one this year. It is a KBC, bought because it fit, was Snell 2000 approved, and it was cheap. Closed face, because I also use it for motorcycle riding. I've also heard HJC are pretty good quality too.

Do you have a sunroof? I'm 6'1", and I have no problem fitting in the car w/helmet on and the sunroof open. With the roof closed though, it is a pretty awkward fit.

BELL is the best, the Mag-4 is a good open face, However a FULL Face helmet provides much better protection espically when used w/ a neck collar. the SR-Pro is basically a Mag-4 with a full chin bar.

make sure the helmet is SA (special application) rated and not just M (motorcycle) ie Snell SA95 or SA2000, not M2000

SA helmets are rated to provide protection from MULTIPLE IMPACTS (like bouncing around inside a car during a triple roll over) as opposed to a Single Impact (M ratings) like falling off a motorcycle

HJC is a good helmet, I know first hand from my good friend breaking his neck in a motorcycle accident.

For autox it's not as big of a deal but Bell's are damn good, I personally like Arai's.

Arai's are also VERY good and are generally the most comfortable - BUT it is VERY hard to find the SA rated Models. they are also EVEN MORE Expen$ive than BELL. :(

SA helmets are also fire resistant (M rated are not required to be fire resistant)... if you want to learn more about the ratings, go here: http://www.smf.org/stds.html
