What is this?

What is this plastic piece called and what function does it serve? 2 of my 3 FDs did not have this piece. Any idea? TIA.

FDokinawa 06-10-03 01:20 AM

wow.. that sucks!!! umm.. not sure what it does.. but none of the 7's I saw in Japan had that. but mine in the states has it..

but if i had to guess.. id say has something to do with moveing air around the tire..

Flyrx7 06-10-03 01:34 AM

That part is stock on the R1/R2 models. I don't know if it actually serves a function other than looks or not. They do kinda' look cool IMO, although the car in the pic needs alot more than those to look "cool" again.

I had a 93 Touring model with that piece. My 93 base did not have it and my current R1 does not have it. Weird....

r0gu3 06-10-03 03:01 AM

My '93 touring is equipped with them. :dunno:

I didn't know you could drive an rx-7 upside down

Special Edition. ;)

MR_Rick 06-10-03 09:03 AM

my base model have them I guess is air thing for the brakes or something

wonder1and 06-10-03 09:17 AM

the special edition came with wheels in the roof and a turbine engine to push it. :D

RonKMiller 06-10-03 09:38 AM

Damn, did you go to a lot of trouble to take that picture or what.

It's an early attempt at "aero"........I painted mine red to match the car. I know, I know...too much time.:D

DamonB 06-10-03 10:07 AM

My 93 base has them. They are just air deflectors; they help smooth the flow around the rear wheels.

Shinobi-X 06-10-03 10:08 AM

My 93 touring has that as well...but one is scraped and coming off from a speed bump. Eventually, I'm just going to pull them off, and see what they do.

I think is there the most for looks, but also if you jack your car up without the orig. jack than you can put it there so you don't screw up the underbody, IMO maybe I'm wrong...

BTW, fuuuuck., what happened, how the hell that did you manage to do that, did you get hurt or anyone? that's horrible. It hurts me to se that.

It's not for the jack. That piece bends like paper under the weight of the car.

JSpecRZ 06-10-03 11:10 AM

That FD was lost on one of the socal cruises....

I think that piece is aesthetics if not for aerodynamics and maybe lower the noise levels... i dunno... sounds good though.. lol

xstacy7 06-10-03 11:35 AM

someone please take those wheels before they go to the junkyard...PLEEEEEAAASSSEEE!!!!!

moehler 06-10-03 11:42 AM

My 95 has them. Not sure what ther used for.

SterlingFD 06-10-03 10:49 PM

That's not my car nor did I take that picture. I'm just using it as reference.

nickpapagiorgio 06-10-03 11:53 PM

I'm not sure what that piece is, my '93 base has them though. But SterlingFD, in the future, if you want to take a picture of something under your car, it's a lot easier to just hold the camera under the car. (You don't need to flip the car upside down)

My 93 base has them, I thought they looked kinda weird being black on my VR so I took them off the week I got my FD. However, I may get them painted VR and put them back on..........

The guy who was driving that car is physically fine, but he hasn't heard from his insurance yet.

BTW, I saw the wheels first hand and at least two of them are bent. The only panel that did not appear to be damaged was the aftermarket hood.

maxpesce 06-11-03 11:44 AM

Thoes pieces SHOULD (were oem equip) on ALL fds. They ar there to smoth air flow around the rear tires improving brake cooling and reducing road noise. fc's have a similar piece and on the fc MAZDA claimed they were good for a .05 reduction aerodynamic drag (Cd)
