Well they go on tonight!

Here's a pic with the pillowmounts that I waited an extra freaking month for. I'll put everthing on tonight and take pictures and give a writeup.

Is that a real Ferrari shoe?

mjw 04-05-02 01:52 PM

I am very interested to hear what you think of them.. I am trying to justify spending the extra $ for a JIC setup so let me know how you like them.

Mazdaspeed right? I would love to see how they work out for you.

nocab72 04-05-02 01:56 PM

Those looks like TEIN's, not Mazdaspeed.

Sorry, I tried to make the image smaller, but for some reason the HTML code is off.

I'm thinking either go with Type Flex w/ EDFC or Blitz.

Short write up.

Well they went on, mostly without a hitch.
I took out the swaybar mount on the passenger side to ease removal of the shock.
This was a BIG mistake, it took longer to fit the bastard back in then any of the install!

I would like to thank my cousin Ryan (The_Flamming_7 ) and Mike (twiztedjeckel) for the help on the install. Mad Props Boyzzz!!!!

I used the basic TEIN instructions which were a great help being that they were in complete Japanese.
Along with information from Rob Robinette's and Steve Cirian's sites. (<--Great Help)

We did the fronts first.
Using nothing but simple hand tools and a emergency jacks from a FD and FC (Don't try this at home kids!!!)
We jacked up the front and then took off the front tires.
I sprayed things down with a quick blast of WD-40 (or was it 10-W40? :D )
The first one took the longest. I already had the coilovers pre-assembled with the pillow mounts (seen in picture), so once I got the shock out, it went right in.
As I said for some odd reason I took off the swaybar mount in order to move the shock body around more freely and it took forever to put back in. :( Taking the clips out that held the brake lines in was also a pain due to the road grime and crap that came with the age.
The fronts went in and we put the tires back on and lowered the front. Damn it looked slammed, and the "jacked out back" look was even more apparent.

We jacked up the rears and repeated most of the same process as the fronts.
Some of those bolts are on real tight!!! An impact wrench would have been handy, but us big and buff guys got them off after a few busted knuckles, choice words and TONS of WD-40. Thanks again Ryan you stud!!!
The rears were even easier than the front and took about 1/2 an hour a piece. If it wasn't for me losing one of the nuts down into the inside of back interior (stupid wrench and shock tower!!! :( ) we would have been done earlier.

I have the coilovers threaded down about 1/2 way to 3/4's down. I set the front settings to 12 out of 16 for stiffness. The rears are set to 10.
Took it out for a spin.

First impressions:
Ride, surprisingly is not that much harsher than the stock R1 springs and shocks. The nose dive is less apparent and full throttle traction seemed to hook up great in the rear.
I did a few peel outs testing to see if any wheel hop would exist and perhaps end up hitting the rear fender. Nothing what so ever. Even after I dropped the clutch thing just stick to the road like fly's on fly paper.
I went over a few bumps to see if the front would bottom out. It didn't and I have no problems turning lock to lock. I also didn't have much of a problem getting in and out of driveways and the such. However the springs will settle and bring the car down lower, at this point is already a little too low for most peoples taste.

I will adjust them slightly in the next few days, moving them up a little and then get an alignment.

Overall I'm very pleased and think they are a great street/auto-x/drag, setup and is easily something I could live with in a daily driver.
Two thumbs up!!!

Here are some pictures afterward and I do thing the results speak for themselves. :)
What do you think???

After searching all day, I ended up finding them at a Foot Action in the Carousel Mall in Syracuse. It was the only place that had them.
And the green has grown on me (kind of like a fungus. :) )
At first I thought the car looked like the Christmas mobile with Green and Red, but you can't see them unless your under the car.

Thanks, yes I plan on being there. I had planned on being at the one a few weeks ago, but that's a long sad story. :(
