Weird Engine Behavior, again
Today I was cruising at 2000 rpm in 4th when the car was warmed up. Suddenly the rpm went up to 3000 automatically (I could hear the engine revving up too). Then it would come back down almost immediately. Same thing happened in 5th. I think it happened two or three times. WTF? Well, it happened before like two weeks ago, then it happened again today. I'm pretty sure it's not the clutch because it didn't happen right after shifting.

Actually I discovered something new today. It usually, not always, happens when I floor the gas a little bit. The rpm would increase by about 1000, but it's like the power cant be totally transferred to the road(I do feel a little push, but not as much as what it should be). In other words, it feels like I'm revving in neutral (of course I'm not in neutral).

clutch sliping?

It doesn't happen right after shifting. I think it can happen anytime, even when cruising. Can it still be clutch slipping?

clutch slipping is possible....I had a friend with a worn clutch with similar symptoms. Temperature affected it too...cruisin around, cold weather, the clutch just seems to lose grip.

When's the last time you changed your plugs/wires?
I had a problem like that before, when I gave it gas, the RPM's would go up and the boost would rise but it gave that sensation of spinning the tires and not going anywhere, even though my tires weren't spinning, alsom it seemed to be more prone to happen in 3rd gear on up...so I changed my plugs and wires...it's fixed. |

if the RPMs are going up and you aren't taking off like normal... it's a good bet it is the clutch... if it isn't happening when you take off easy but always seems to happen when you are pulling out to pass someone (or like circumstances).... clutch...

Yeah...the clutch is a likely candidate, I'm just bringing a possible 'culprit' to light because my clutch is fine and I had the same symptoms he's mentioning...except one thing, my check engine light came on eventually...
I had been using leaded race gas which I think fouled out my plugs as well as my o2 sensor...have you been using hi-octane race gas? |
I used to put race gas in it (100 octane) and mix it with 91, now i dont. Just 91.

One more thing, when that happens (rpm goes up and insufficient power to match the increasing rpm), it's like I gave too much gas. But in fact, I didn't. For example, I just blip the gas and the rpm goes up way more than what I expect.

Well, when was the last time you changed your plugs and o2 sensor?
Running race gas is good for a turbo car, but only when it's on the move! It can have some side effects if you sit in a traffic jam for instance....over time it will eventually foul things out. I'd say if it's been a while and since your car has 142k on it, might as well spend the $30 for plugs and $20 for a o2 sensor and see if that fizes the pproblem, it's a hell of a lot cheaper than trying to mess with the clutch, and plus if that doesn't turn out to be the answer, at least you'll have given yourself a tune-up!!! |
O2 sensor is new and spark plugs will be changed this weekend.

i think the other guys were right when they told you that you need a new clutch. from what you described in your previous posts about the revs flying and the car not going anywhere, it sounds exactly like the symptoms you would have if your clutch were slipping.
replace it soon, or one day you will not be able to accellerate at all when you are on the freeway far far away from home, and you will need to waste your clutch savings money on a tow truck to tow your car back home. |
o2 sensor, plugs, I don't think so.
If anything says slipping clutch it is exaclty your problem. When you are a kid this is what they tell you. if you hit the gas engien revs, and you don't go anywhere. boom it is the clutch. very simply really. get an sct SS, and through in a lightened flywheel, you will be very happy. |
I bet my left nut on it that it's your clutch ! Wait a minute...I only have one nut lol :eek: JK. Anyway, this is exactly what happened when my clutch went out. You don't feel it when shifting as much as you do while cruising just like you are experiencing. It's like your car is reving way higher than it should be for the speed it's going? If so, then that's the prob. Go with an ACT...I hear they are the clutch of choice at the momento. ;)

CLUTCH! I had the same thing happend to me i only had 62K on mine though consider your self lucky!! like what the the other guy sad

I hope it's not gonna cost a lot to replace the clutch....I cant even get a new flywheel, it's quite expensive.
