weird coolant problem

I replaced some coolant hoses last week, and today I found out I had a small leak, and i traced the leak back to the big rad hose that goes from filler neck to rad, the strange thing is that the leak seems to come from inside of the rubber wrap thing on the hose, i lift the rubber wrap up and it was wet inside. On my bottom rad hose, I also found it wet under the rubber wrap thing. And rest of the hose is dry, except under the rubber wrap. Both hoses are new hoses from mazdatrix.


Has anyone had similar problems? why is it leaking from inside the rubber wrap?

I am not sure why a new hose would leak... but you better keep an eye on that. I had a rad hose blow out on me driving... no fun, thank god I had it under control or I would have said goodbye to my engine.

This is kind of strange, but I am having the same type of problem. However I don't... "think" that your hose is leaking... although I could be wrong.
I am having a problem of that the coolant system will not "suck" back into the system. The only way that I can think this can happen is if there is a small leak that allows air into the system, but doesn't leak out "a lot" of coolant.

Anyway, I know exactly what coolant line that you are talking about. I checked that line tonight and I have the same type of fluid under the rubber insulator. However the fluid doesn't seem to be coolant. It seems to be an oily substance. It could be the fluid that they used to cover the hose at the factory... I don't know.

I am getting a pressure tester tomorrow to test out my theory and see if there is a leak there.
Oh and this hose I'm talking about is brand new also. I just put the motor in.
I don't know if this is going to help but I will report back my findings.

I think all three of us are having the same problem.:) I am losing only about a couple of ounces of coolant and after that it stays level for days, weeks. I finally did a pressure test and found a leak from the lower radiator hose only when it gets up to 16-17 psi. So, maybe this is why I can drive around all week with no probs. I still have not had the chance to chane the hose. I actually bought about three hoses and will replace all three as I suspect they may be on the way out as well. Report back fellas. I wanna see if you guys can solve this before I do. :cool:

I'm going to try and find a coolant system pressure system today. None of the autopart stores around here rent them. So I'm giong to buy one. Sears has one for 80 bucks, i'm going to check Napa today.

also test line to exp tank for leaks. my oem rad cap check valve was too stiff, and did not allow good return of coolant. Stant 1.1 bar cap has worked much better, lighter check valve action.

Thanks for the advise, I have a new radiator cap that came with the AST that I just installed. I can't remember if it's a Stant cap or not. It's the one with the lever action to release pressure. It comes with the Pettit.
