~105k miles on chassis
~45k miles on reman engine (installed in 2003, not exactly sure on the mileage, but compression and waterseals are fine)
~25k miles on turbos (i replaced the turbos with turbos that had a documented 16k miles on them)
full non-sequential conversion if everything is removed -5
full emissions removal air pump stuff -15
ACT S/S clutch SS OMP lines add a pound for the clutch and lines
custom downpipe -14
magnaflow hi-flow cat -10
Racing Beat single-tip catback exhaust -10
Apex'i intakes, aftermarket silicon couplers for IC piping about the same
battery very nicely relocated into the hatch area behind the rear divider -10 if it's a sm battery
Dynamat +10
all cooling mods are done:
koyo radiator +4
water temp gauge, boost gauge and pettit ast +2
no coolant leaks
water temps stay right at 180 even when flogging the car at the drag strip or autox (only autox'd it once)

64 - 16 = 48

car weight 2780 - 48 = 2732

Jacob,
This is approx what your FD weighs with a full tank and as I previously mentioned in the 3rd post or so of this thread the scales didn't lie ;)

shit mine reads 3210 on the driver door too. how did they make it heavier? it has the same shit as the other tourings. where do you go to weight the car? i tried to use the bathroom scale and it shattered when i drove up on it :) kvn

When you subtract the weight of the missing gas from a full tank, the jack, and the spare tire from the 2789 curb weight you don't have much left over for exhaust component weight savings.......despite the claims made elsewhere on this thread.

It's all gotta add up people.

What was wrong about my post? Nothing, we don' have exact amounts of material to measure. The only crutch you're standing on is his gasoline reading, which first of all is horribly inaccurate and second of all is more than likely just flat out wrong.

Apparently, you don't read so well in any case. I took the average of the weights of the exhaust systems that we had information on. The stock system weighs in at 85.6 lbs. with the AVERAGE aftermarket exhaust weighing in at half that. 45lbs. from the exhaust alone is significant. Using the Greddy Ti exhaust you end up saving about 58-60lbs. of weight savings. You're doubling the weight you'd get if you used other weight savings mods like carbon fiber hoods or trunks. If you don't agree that it's significant, we'll you're just an idiot and we should all stop debating. But the bottom line is that you CAN drop that much weight from changing just your exhaust system.

on the door? is that the gvw, with 2 occupants gas and cargo?

Jacob, I got your weight reduction in my driveway.

EDIT: I just noticed you have 6,8xx posts on here. Jesus Christ.

Fucking hell matty, look what you've started. These poor gullible saps will believe anything and you're here playing with their emotions.

The weight stamped on the plate inside the door says 3210 on ALL FDs. It's the GROSS vehicle weight, which means it's the most that car could ever possibly weight while remaining functional. This is calculated by curb weight + maximum payload.

Monkman33 06-24-07 08:15 PM

I am pretty sure the bathroom scale guy was being sarcastic.

This thread, although rediculous, should remind us of a few things:

1. When trying to quantify weight savings, it's best to be as specific as possible, because weight weenies are very picky people.

2. There are LOTS of ways to add or reduce weight in your car. For instance, a worn set of tires often weigh 1-3lbs less per tire than when they were new. Aftermarket speakers usually weigh 1-2 lbs more than the OEM speakers they replace.

3. If you're trying to make a very accurate comparison (for instance, trying to take 10lbs worth of brackets and sound insulation out of the car), it would be best to do both before & after measurements with a full tank of gas. Use a gas can if needed...

Just for kicks, my car (1994 base model) weighed in at 2691 lbs. More info, including corner weights, in this thread: https://www.rx7club.com/race-car-tech-103/had-my-fd-corner-weighed-advise-comments-suggestions-430565/#post6062976

Ok i didnt read 5 pages. but how exactly do you get your car on a scale? Where do you go to weigh it?

Which is just another way of saying you can't make it come out your way. Once we know that that gas tank is mostly empty....doesn't matter if it's 1/4 or 1/8...that accounts for the majority of the weight reduction. You're stuck with the poster's 2660 total weight and that leaves very little for the exhaust system weight savings you suppose. Which is why you keep talking but can't plug in numbers to make your case.

The lack of gas in the tank accounts for the overwhelming majority of the weight reduction in the original poster's case. Even if you assume the tank is 1/4 full instead of 1/8 full once you know his total weight of 2660, and you account for the missing jack, etc, you don't have an amount left over that would show a big exhaust system weight savings. It's simple math.

of those arguing, have any of you weighed your modded FD's (preferrably R1 or base models) with mods? i have a custom 3" downpipe, 3" magnaflow hi-flow cat, and RB single catback. it's heavy, maybe slightly lighter than stock.

i had 17 fewer gallons of gasoline, a removed spare tire and jack. i'm not sure why everyone is still arguing about the 2660.

I'm certainly not arguing with you. All your numbers add up for me. I gained some insight from your original post.

I guess the only thing I'd be curious about is for you to put the jack and the spare back in the car, and fill it up to the top with gas. Then weigh the car. I'm going to guess it'll be fairly close to 2789 lbs. ....maybe 2778 ...something like that.

Wait, you're telling him what his car weighs based on what your car weighs?! LOL!!!
Too, too funny. Yeah, that's real science for 'ya. A telepathic scale.

"Fritz Flynn - psychic weigher" Haven't I seen your act on the carnival midway?

"I can guess your weight, or you win a cupie doll." Too, too funny.

ptrhahn 07-10-07 08:32 AM

Actually, it DOES matter.

The only thing anyone is "stuck" with are the established weights of the components that we are talking about (exhaust, aftermarket exhaust, spare, etc.). They've been weighed individually by numerous reputable FD owners years before you crawled out from under a rock, and numbers posted. They are inarguable, gas or no gas.

You're right the stock exhaust weighs the same as an aftermarket exhaust.

Once you put the jack or anything else he removed back in the car it would weigh the same.

Thanks for finally helping me figure this out.

It's been a tremendous thrill being envolved in this mind altering experience and I'm so thankful that you've been willing to share your great wisdom concerning weights and measures.

I've clearly gleaned all I can from this thread and once again thanks for your help :icon_tup:

Monkman33 07-10-07 07:09 PM

So, this thread is still going because someone doesn't want to listen to people that have ACTUALLY weighed the parts removed? wow.
