Water collecting under bins
 

I pulled my rear bins to install a cleaner set last week. Under the drivers side bin I found a puddle of water. Shocking, but after some thought I figured it might have leaked in when I rinsed off the top of my gas tank a couple months ago. So I cleaned it up and waited for the felt to dry.

I came back today after being away for a few days and again, another puddle of water there on the driver's side. So it wasn't from rinsing the tank - it must be leaking into the car from the outside. I inspected the hatch and door seals, nothing obvious. Nothing else inside the car is wet. About the same amount of water, though. The pic is from today.

I'd like suggestions on how to find where it's coming in. The car is parked outside on level ground.

sunroof drain?

is the floor under the seat wet under the carpet?

That was my first thought too... but checked his profile & it's an R2.

FBs get water there from the wheel well rotting out, but you have to drive in the wet for that to happen... but other than that you are left with sunroof or hatch i would say. unless maybe there is a floor plug thereabouts... maybe i have been driving jeeps too long...

The only other spot that would leak would be the rear glass seal.

Make sure all of your drains are not clogged, especially around the rear hatch. If they are blocked, water will pool.

Yep, no sunroof.

I'll double-check the drains, but when I lifted the hatch there was no water in those channels.

I think I'll take a bucket of water and pour it over the various glass seals to see if that tells me anything.

I'm not trying to jet your tread, just dont wanna start another one. but i'm having a water leak problem too. it is under the PS seat, i have a touring model. so is that the sunroof drain? please give more information.

My R-1 wing was put on incorrectly so it was leaking into the car, could be that. I had to rip it off and get rid of the rust from the shittly drilled holes. Then I primered the holes and used a bunch of marine grade silicone sealant around the bolt holes. No more water sloshing around in the tire well and bins.

for leaks in under your seats check your door, specifically the plastic water guard right behind the door panel. I had puddles under my seats until it took some of my wonderful marine grade silicone sealant and re sealed the bottom of the plastic water guard which was leaking water into the car. Yes I have had a few water problems haha. Leak free for about 8 months now.

Are you using your air conditioning? Is so, do you have the rubber tube that is near the passengers feet connected to the firewall? This vent tube lets out the condensation from the AC system.

I remember a drain tube coming from the roof area down the b piller and drains to the outside right around where the water is collecting. I can't remember if the tube was clear or black. I'm thinking black. I'll check the FSM.

i didnt run my ac. but couple days ago was rained really bad. the next day i look at my car. under the passenger side seat is really wet, cause i'm currently changing over my interior. but i will check the water guard tonight. thanks

I had an FD that leaked from the screws that hold in the top of the taillight. The factory uses a plastic insert w/foam gasket, the foam dies and the hatch leaks, put the brakes on and the water goes under the bins.

The R1 wing is another good place to look.

Also, next to the hatch hinges, check the rubber boots around the wires to the hatch's defroster and antenna. If cracked or loose, they'd let water in... possibly to run down the hidden/back side of the interior trim.

Wierd. Lucky you happend to pull those bins. But now you've got me a little concerned.
If you have access to compressed air, I'd blow out any drains you do have. Sitting inside the car with someone outside with a garden hose might be the quickest way to find it.

The plastic panels on the rear of the car ar known to start leaking (especially if you've ever removed your tail lights. I'm referring to the black plastic pieces you see when you open the hatch. Two of the screws have to be sealed when there removed (or age causes the sealant to dry up and crack) Since you don't have a sunroof this would be where I'd check for water entry into the cabin.

I may have found the solution:

leaking seals under my R1 wing. Water got into the hatch and collected in the plastic lining at the rear of the hatch. When I opened the hatch, the water ran down - some just drained out. But some water appears to have run down into the upper part of the hatch, into the rubber jacket that surrounds the wires for the defroster, into the roof, and down the inside of the b-pillar on the drivers side. The water then collected under the driver side bin with nowhere to go.

Crazy, huh?

I can't understand why you didn't figure that out in the first place :D

sorry to bump this thread, but i recently noticed the carpet under my driver seat is constantly wet after rain and i've also noticed some calcium/nasty deposit on the driver side bin door hinges.

i dont have a clue where its comming from, passenger side is always dry.

my car doesnt have a wing

would have been good information to have included in your first post. Seal around rear glass maybe?
