Warning lights not working - mystery solved.

Yesterday, I was able to replace the bulb for the security light and get that working again.

Today I was scratching my head because the overheat exhaust lamp didn't seem to be working. According to the workshop manual, this lamp should be "on" when ignition is "on" but the engine is not running.

In case someone else has similar problems, I figured I'd write this up and hopefully save them the time I spent hunting this down.

The workshop manual electrical troubleshooting guide has a troubleshooting guide on C2-26, flowchart #14.

Everything checked out ok - bulb, fuses, continuity etc. Then I finally noticed some of the other warning lamps weren't working either - alternator, oil , and the coolant lamp. None of these lamps were lit when the ignition was "on" and the engine was not running.

So, from here, it was pretty easy to debug. Flowchart #2 on C2-14 describes the testing process. As it turns out the connector into the alternator was not seated.

A little "click" and everything was back to working as expected.

So, if you have the 4 warning lamps oil, coolant, alternator and overheat not working....try checking the alternator connector.

The FD Body Electrical Troubleshooting manual is probably the best automotive manual I have seen.

It has detailed diagnostic procedures for AC, electrical and many other systems. It has never failed me.

If there were an equivalent manual for other major FD systems this board would have far fewer posts.
