Is the Vintage Red paint on 94 FD a 3 stage process?
 

Hi guys, I'm getting my carbon fiber hood painted and I'm just wondering if the VR paint is 3 stage paint. Will a body shop have to blend it in with the fenders and front bumper? Do you recommend removing the hood when they paint it or just leave it on the car? THanks

You can tell if it does by the paint code. If the paint code is NU you have a single stage paint. If it is NT then it is a three stage paint. I know the base models are just a single stage paint. My car is a 93 VR touring and it has a three starge paint. I had to get the rear fender repainted and it took the shop 2 days to match the paint. They did a good job but I can still tell. You are going to have to repaint your fenders and probably blend it into the doors. If you just do the hood it will stick out like a sore thumb. Hope this helps

I believe only the Touring models with the "high reflex paint" option are the 3-stage (for VR at least).

is it difficult to get a VR car entirely painted and made to look like original paint? I don't want to end up with some orangish monstrousity. :o

The vintage red IS a three stage, it is a primer, pearl and clearcoat. This is what I was told by a bodyshop that painted my front lip. You CAN get a picture taken of your paint with a special hand held camera that will then computer match your paint to a SINGLE stage paint that can be mixed. My car is garage kept and is not a daily driver so this worked for me as my paint is perfect. I cannot tell the difference betwee the sigle stage paint on my front lip and the rest of the car. do not use a single stage paint, it will not match. I garrentee it. I used a base coat, clear coat on my wing and it didn't match. I ended up repainting it with a the right tri stage paint. It is a base coat, pearl coat and a clear coat. A good shop will be able to match it but it will take time, the paint is faded and thats why it will not match perfectly. It might be easier to repaint your car, but it will cost way more money. Just make sure you get a reputable shop.
